How to Coach U10 Soccer, a Crash Course
Eight Tips to Coaching Youth Soccer
This is a crash course in coaching a youth soccer team. Follow these eight tips to help your team to a winning season. The most important thing for kids is to have fun, but it’s always easier to have fun when your team wins. You’ll learn how to start and end each practice, and how to utilize the stick and wedge formation to generate a defensive-minded team resulting in wins instead of losses. This article will be especially helpful for those who want to know how to coach u8 or 810 soccer, but it applies to all age levels.
Here are the tips to coaching a winning team:
1- Team Run
Have your players line up along the goalie box. Have them hold hands and run to the opposite side of the field and back. Tell them they need to jog as fast as the slowest player. This simple drill builds unity and a sense of purpose.
2- Find a Goalie
Line up your team at midfield and have them run to the penalty line and back to help you identify the faster players from the slower. Have them line up and punt the ball. Ask the top two or three children who can punt the ball the farthest if they would be goalie. If not, ask if they would be a reserve.
If you don’t find a player interested in the position, ask if the top candidates if they would just play for goalie for one half and striker the next. Most kids want to play the forward/striker position and score goals, so offering to rotate two players as a goalie one half and striker the next makes the goalie position more appealing.
3- Stick Defense
Make defense a priority. Use a «stick» defense where you stack five kids in front of the goalie. The stick rotates around the goalie like a hand on a clock, pointing toward the opposing ball handler attacking your goal. It can stretch to the midfield line as the ball moves into the opposing penalty box.
Generally, there is a fifty-percent chance of the other team having a star player who can dribble down the field and score. Traditional teams have three or four forwards and three or four halfbacks. These alignments leave three players to defend the goal (and a chasing halfback or two). Five defenders are better. If you are playing less than 11 due to illness or vacation, you can shorten the stick to three or four players. Even with nine players, there are still three defenders.
Players in the stick are numbered one through five, with one being the closest to the goal. You want your slower and less-skilled players to play in the stick. It is important to have one older, quicker player in the two spot to control the stick. When the ball is on the other side of the field, the #2 directs the others to move up and stretch the stick. The least-skilled player should be in the #3 spot where the two can direct the player as they defend the goal.
4- Wedge Halfbacks
The halfback or Midfielder positions forms a three-person «wedge». The wedge is dispatched to stop the opposing offense and deflect the ball into the opposing territory. The center position is flanked by a player on the left and right who are five feet behind and ten feet sideways from the center. They travel together, seeking out the opposition’s attacker. They do not cross midfield, and act as a protective «cap» to the stick. The center, as all «first» defenders, must shadow the attacker to force them to stop or slow down. The center maintains a five to ten foot cushion from the attacker, retreating as needed. The attacker must go left or right, but will likely slow as the left or right wedge player presses closer to the center. Attacking the formation is frustrating. Trying to get by seven players as opposed to weaving through a few is difficult.
If the attacking player passes to their left or to the formation’s right side, the right wedge player becomes the center and shadows the ball-handler while the center drops behind and takes the right side. The wedge re-forms as the left wedge player slides over and maintains the left side of the wedge.
5- Two Strikers
The two remaining players are flexible positions. One should play center striker, playing as far up as possible. The center forward plays as far as they can without being offside. The other forward plays outside striker, and moves left or right, following the ball when it’s on defense. The outside striker hangs out near midfield, and needs to receive the ball to either push down the sideline or pass to the center striker.
6- First Half is All Defense
This formation appears sluggish as it is not attack-oriented. The strategy of the stick and wedge formation is to physically wear out the opposition in the first half, allowing the formation to press forward to the opposition’s goal later in the second half.
Starting with a strong defense and adjusting to more offense is always the right move in youth soccer. A strong offense does little when your team is trailing 0-2 five minutes into the game. The stick and wedge formation draws more opposing players on offense to match your defensive player count, weakening their defense as the game progresses.
7- Every Team’s Weakness
The weakness of almost every formation is when an opposing team moves the ball quickly down the sideline and into your penalty box. You can take an extra player to mark their star player, resulting in one fewer on the stick. The stick should not extend sideways outside of the penalty box. Let their strikers tire out between the penalty box and sideline. When they center the ball, you’ll have plenty of defenders to contest their attack
8- PK’s are OK
There is nothing wrong with a tie. Prepare your team for penalty kicks. It’s fun to end your practices with penalty kick drills. A great drill is to put an assistant coach in the goal with your goalie and another player. Have the three spread out, each defending a third of the goal. Have your players line up in an arc around the goal and have them launch balls into the net at once. It’s great practice, and it makes a real pk easier as there will only be one goalie and not three.
Teach your kids to «pass» the ball into the net with the inside of their foot rather than trying to launch it with their inside toe. This is a more accurate shot from a short distance, and nearly as powerful.
This stick and wedge works and provides a formation with the most defense. Start strong on defense and add more offense as needed later in the game. Find a goalie first, and fill in the rest of your team. There’s nothing wrong with a tie. You now have the knowledge to put your team in a position to win and have a successful season!

The Super Falconet of Nigeria – Glorious March to Stardom
The Falconets stormed Chile in 2008 with high expectations from millions of Nigerians back home. They were grouped alongside Chile, England and New Zea-land. The team led by Coach Daniel Evumena, had a brilliant outing, as they defeated New Zea-land 3-2, in an action packed opening encounter. In their second game, the Falconets drew 1-1 with England, before inflicting a 2-0 defeat on Chile in their last group match. They qualified for the quarterfinal, where they were paired with France. The Quarter final clash was a five goal thriller, which ended 3-2 in favor of France. The Falconets thus crashed out of the tournament, but they held their head high up with their scintillating tournament.
The team returned to the World stage in 2010 when the tournament was hosted by Germany. The team started their campaign on a bright note when they drew 1-1 with England in a game that saw Desire Oparanozie scoring the decisive equalizer to give Nigeria a deserved point. In their second group game played against Japan at the Impuls Arena, the Falconets created a major upset by beating top favorite Japan 2-1 in a game that saw Amarachi Okoronkwo and Desire Oparanozie scoring for the Nigerian side. The stage was then set for their final group clash against Mexico, and the Nigerians who were already sure of a place in the quarterfinals, rallied to a 1-1 draw to place second in their group.
At the quarterfinal stage, Nigeria was grouped alongside reigning champions USA. It was a classical match up that saw the best of African football. Amber Brooks of USA had put her team ahead as early as the 9th minutes, and it seemed like the goal would be enough to book them a place in the last four, when from the blues, Helen Ukaonu fired a rocket of a free kick into the top corner of the USA goal in the 79th minutes to level scores 1-1. The game was then decided on penalty shootout that saw the Nigerians triumph over their USA counterpart 4-2. It was a momentous occasion for female football in Africa, as no African country had ever defeated USA at that level.
The semi final pairing saw Nigeria clashing with South America new comer-Colombia. It was a game that was decided by an early goal scored by diminutive Ebere Orji in the 2nd minutes of play, after the Colombian goalkeeper-Paula Forero failed to deal with a long ball played into her goal area. The win saw Nigeria entering history book as the first African side to qualify for the finals of the FIFA Women World Cup.
In the final decided at Schuco Arena in Bielefeld, Germany proved a handful for the young Nigerians who were overwhelmed by the occasion. They won the encounter 2-0 with the Nigerians settling for a well deserved Silver medal.

Try This Technique to Stay in the Zone Or Present Moment in Golf Putting
«All great contests at some point become head games. It does not matter if it is Politics and elections, military campaigns or sporting events, in the end it is about keeping your head and your heart for the fight.» Bill Clinton speaking to the media after watching the USA soccer team winning their group at the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.
Why are you playing golf? Is it to beat the competition, for the pure competitive aspect? Are you trying to challenge yourself and see how good you can get? Do you just play for pure fun and enjoyment regardless of what you score? Is your enjoyment tied in with your performance, the better you perform the more you enjoy yourself?
No matter what your own personal motivation I am betting that if you play better you are a happier human being afterwards. We all want to play effortlessly and have fun without making a mess of things and embarrassing ourselves.
Try this strategy the next time you play. Forget about playing 18 holes and do not even think about playing a single hole, not a par 5 or 4 or even a par 3. There are no holes and the holes do not have numbers associated with them. There is merely a walk along which you will hit your ball, one shot at a time.
Step 1 – Stand over the shot you will hit and pick a precise point in the fairway where you want your ball to go to. Imagine the flight, bounce and run of the ball to that precise point. Internally, describe the shot to yourself as you imagine hitting it. Be realistic and only pick a shot you know you are capable of hitting.
Step 2 – Now say these exact words to yourself. You will need to write them down on paper until you have memorised them «I do not care if the ball does not do exactly as I have imagined the perfect shot to be. I will completely accept the shot and be happy even if it does not finish exactly where I have planned. I play this shot merely for enjoyment and for the personal interest and challenge of just this one shot.»
Step 3 – Now have a practice swing that mimics the exact swing you believe you need to make in order to send the ball to your precise target. Go through your setup routine, look at the target you have picked and then focus intently on the back of the ball and swing away.
Step 4 – Notice where your ball has gone and if it has done what you wanted congratulate yourself. You can even say «YES!» Internally with emotion and really enjoy the feeling if it was a great shot, celebrate it. Then forget it and recompose yourself. There is only one shot and it is the next one. There is no game, no hole no par or birdie, just one golf shot on its own and you will walk up and play it soon.
Important Alternate Step 4 If the shot was not as you planned. If the shot was not what you planned then just shrug your shoulders and put the club back in your bag. As you put the club in the bag imagine that all your emotions go back to complete neutral. Look around and think of things more important in your life than playing golf, hum some music, chat with a friend but forget golf. There is only one shot and it is the next one. There is no game, no hole, no par or birdie, just one golf shot on its own and you will walk up and play it soon.
Walk up to your ball and repeat the steps 1 to 4 again. Continue doing this until you take your ball out of the hole in the grass on the last green you walk to that day.
Can you do this? Can you learn to play one shot at a time and stay completely in the present for each shot? Can you forget results and what they do or do not mean? Is it possible for you to just play golf for the challenge of seeing how focussed you can remain on hitting one golf shot? If you can do these things and keep doing them over and over you will get better and better at staying in the present for one shot at a time and your golf game is going to improve dramatically.
