Did you know… From 1960 to 1971, Ron Clarke (Australia) set 19 world records in the 5000m, 10,000m and other long-distance races. Unfortunately, Ron has never won an Olympic gold medal. In the mid-1960s, he said, «The effort is not continuous as it has to be in a race. By running fast lap times and then allowing himself time to recover, an athlete is deceiving himself as to his fitness». He is author of two books: «The Unforgiving Minute» (1966) and «The Lonely Breed» (1967).

The United States of America

Did you know… The state of Hawaii has won ten gold medals at the Summer Olympics(1896-2008). It has more Olympic gold medals than Thailand, Venezuela, and Lithuania. The Olympic champions are: Tommy Kono ( weightlifting/ two golds,1952 & 1956), Warren Kealoha (swimming/two golds,1920 & 1924 ), Duke Paoa Kahanamouku (aquatics/ three golds, 1912 & 1920), Bryan Ezra Tsumoru Clay (track & field/ one gold medal, 2008), Buster Crabbe (swimming/ one gold medal, 1932), Herman Ronald Frazier (athletics/ one gold medal, 1976).

At the Winter Olympic Games in New York in 1980, the United States men’s ice hockey team won the gold medal. During the final match, the U.S. team scored a major upset over the Soviet Union (or USSR), which had won the gold medal in Austria ’64, France ’68, Japan ’72 and Austria’76.

American boxer Muhammad Ali -formerly known as Cassius Clay- failed in the Pan American Games trials in 1959, but he won the gold medal in the light heavyweight (81kg/178 lbs) category at the Games of the XVII Olympiad in Italy in 1960.

South America

Did you know… The Uruguayan men’s basketball team qualified to represent the Western Hemisphere in the Games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad in Los Angeles in 1984. A year ago, Uruguay did not compete at the Pan American Games in Venezuela.

At the 1976 Montreal Games, Brazil won only two bronze medals. Joao Carlos de Oliveira, a world-class sportsman, could not win the gold medal in the triple jump. The South American men’s soccer team finished 4th place-Brazil won the FIFA World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Venezuela’s Rafael Vidal -who spent several years as a student in the United States and was graduated from Florida University- earned the bronze medal in the men’s 200m butterfly at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, California.

Europe

Did you know… Kosovo -it is the youngest country on earth- will compete in London 2008. For political reasons, Kosovo could not participate in the 2008 Olympic Games in China. This new nation could participate in at least ten sports: athletics, boxing, Kayak/canoeing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting, wrestling…

The British basketball teams have qualified for the London 2012. Since 1952, the United Kingdom has never played in the Olympic Games, European tournaments, world championships.The British men’s basketball team finished 20th place at the London Summer Olympic Games in 1948.

In Athens 1896, Paul Neumann became the first swimmer from Austria to win a gold medal.

Three Swiss sportswomen participated in the Olympic Games in 1924. It was the first time Switzerland sent sportswomen to the Summer Olympics…

At the 1896 Olympic Games, Greece -host country- won 10 gold medals and took second place in the unofficial team championships.

Central America

Did you know… Guatemala -an anti-Communist state in the 20th century- did not decline to send an Olympic team to the Olympic Games in the USSR (currently Russia) in 1980. Honduras, Belize and El Salvador -the other anti-Communist nations in Central America- boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics…

North America

Did you know… During the 1904 Olympic Games, the Canadian men’s soccer team won the global title. The Olympic winners were: Ernest Linton, John Gourley, Albert Johnston, Thomas Taylor, Alexander Hall, William Twaits, Georges Ducker, Robert Lane, John Fraser, Frederick Steep, Gordon McDonald, Albert Henderson.

Caribbean

Did you know… At the Summer Olympic Games in 1904 in Missouri(USA), Cuba finished third in the unofficial team standings, behind the United States and Germany. Ramón Fonst earned three gold medals in fencing events.

In 1975, Hasely Crawford -a sprinter from Trinidad & Tobago- earned silver in the 100m at the Pan American Games in Mexico City. Nine months, at the Games of the XXI Olympiad in Montreal (Canada), Hasely won the 100m event.

Africa

Did you know… Cameroon -a tropical country on the African continent- sent one competitor to the Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Isaac Menyoli said, «Everything is wonderful. It’s like being in a fantasy. I’m happy to represent my country».

In Athens 2004, Kirsty Coventry, a practically unknown swimmer from Zimbabwe, won the gold medal in the women’s 200m backstroke. Curiously, she is an American-educated athlete.

Blackburn v Newcastle

Blackburn rooted second from bottom entertain Newcastle at Ewood Park. This see’s Sam Allaydace former team come to Blackburn. Newcastle are in poor form this season. A number of players are rumoured to be leaving St James Park. Shay Given has been the one exception, his saves alone managed to keep Liverpool at bay, and for that Arsenal have been altered to his goal keeping prowess.

Blackburn have picked up a few points since Ince was sacked earlier on. With Santa Cruz rumoured as wanting to join Hughes at City, his goals will be needed this weekend if Blackburn are to get anything from the game.

Bolton v Manchester United

Bolton Wanderers lost their previous league game away against Arsenal and only won once in their last six games. They have lost five games in the last six. They have only managed to score 4 times in this period.

Bolton have been linked to Jamie Bullard from Fulham but as yet have not been able to meet the asking price.

Manchester United won their last game 1-0 at home against Wigan, and are the leagues in form team. With Rooney out for a few weeks after scoring the winning goal against Wigan, Tevez should start the match.

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Bolton at the Reebok last season, but the champions are in top form and will be looking to take first place from Liverpool by 5pm. And with Bolton having been on a dreadful run, there can only be one team in this match.

Maradona has often vied to be considered the best footballer in history with Pele. However most people agree that while Maradona had prodigious talents his behaviour off the field often left a lot to be desired,and his constant battle against drug addiction made him far from the comparatively «squeaky clean» character that Pele was during and after his twenty plus years at the top of the game during the fifties, sixties and seventies.

Like Pele, Maradona came from a very humble background in the slums of Buenos Aires. Yet despite that his prodigious talent as a footballer was there for all to see, and by the age of sixteen he was banging goals in from every angle for his local club, Argentinos Juniors. Such was his dramatic impact that there was even mention that he should be «shoed in» to the 1978 World Cup Squad even before his 18th birthday.

That was not to be, but he did make his full international debut not long after, and achieved his childhood dream of pulling on the famous dark blue and yellow soccer uniform of Boca Juniors in 1981, when he had just turned 21.

However news of Maradona’s prodigious talents has reached Europe. After just a season at Boca, there is a lot of irony involved as he was snapped up by Basque giants Barcelona, just as Messi was more than twenty years later. Yet his career and his stay at Barcelona were less than successful. Maradona was the victim of very tight marking and crude tackles, with one of them ending with Diego with his leg in plaster for several months. Rumour has it that it was In Barcelona that Maradona began to experiment with drugs, casting a shadow over his career for many years after he left the club and the city.

Both Barcelona and Maradona were relieved when the club agreed to his transfer 1984 to Napoli in Italy’s Serie A. At Napoli everything fell into place for Diego and it was there that he finally realised his potential. For about six seasons, everything that Maradona touched turned to Gold.

Napoli won their first Serie an Italian Championships in 1986/87 and again in 1989/1990, and was also runners up twice. In addition they won the UEFA Cup in 1989.

Maradona was unstoppable at the World Cup in Mexico in 1986, and he certainly used everything in his repertoire to make sure that he would get to hold up the World Cup. Maradona also made it to the final with Argentina in Italy four years later, where they lost by the only goal to a typically stodgy West Germany.

USA 1994 saw Diego and his career in decline and after failing a drug test for ephedrine doping; FIFA expelled him from the tournament.

After serving a 15-month ban for failing a drug test, Maradona had already left Napoli in disgrace by 1992, after that he did the rounds of a few secondary clubs and by 1995 at the age of 35 his career was officially over, although he had lost his magic around five seasons earlier.

A football talent that could not be denied, Maradona allowed his personal problems to take a lot of the edge of his career. When the final judgement comes down to who was the best footballer ever to grace the World Cup, there is no escaping that fact.

The traffic issues in the United States are getting to be a very serious problem and they exist in nearly all of the 380 major cities in the United States and most of the suburban areas. It is seriously affecting the quality of life and taking away time from family and friends.

The automobile in America is given Americans a sense of freedom to travel and yet at the same time the traffic congestion has become a nightmare in the American way of life. To top it off fuel prices at over three dollars per gallon are outrageous and speaking of topping it off the average SUV now costs $100 to fill up the tank.

But how long is this good for perhaps only a week driving to work or a week and a half shuttling the kids around town to soccer, after school activities or bringing them to school on a rainy day. Is this the quality of life that Americans expect each time the commute to work is increased that means less time with the family and less time to enjoy life.

If the productivity of the American worker is up as studies show it is unfortunate to see that the productivity in the family and our standard of living is being driven down in free parking lots we used to call freeways. And to add insult to injury we are now funding international terrorists to four in Middle Eastern oil at three dollars per gallon.

Traffic issues in the United States are a serious problem and they are hurting our standard of living and quality-of-life, while we pay extra money to wait in long lines and traffic jams. We must do something and in a big way right now. Please consider this in 2006 and yes I do have a plan; so, Vote for Lance.
