  1. This is not rocket science. U.S. Men's soccer sucks because all the best athlete's in the U.S. play real sports, leaving soccer with 2nd or 3rd tier athletes.

  2. The American Women’s National Team was beaten by a bunch of 15 year olds. Americans, for the most part, prefer football ?. We would rather pay more than double the price to see an NFL game than a soccer game.

  3. Because it doesn't pay well.if it did a male athlete would choose it. If it paid here like in other countries, we'd dominate it like other sports

  4. Do you know what the problem is with the USA and Canada?
culturally speaking, Football is not rooted in these two countries, otherwise the US would have won the World Cup a long time ago over the Europeans and South Americans. It is a giant that has not yet realized that it has human material available to assemble a team. In any country where Football is already popular and practiced, all of them have as their main root, the Neighborhood, a district or a City, and that the community identifies with this club, that's where great teams arise, and consequently an entity manages to form a national team. Consequently, clubs invest in talent. Now charging to pay and despise a talent because of a bad clinical look of a scout, it's absurd. I've never seen a player (Dempsey) have to travel 3 hours from one city to another just to train. Here in Brazil it would be comical, every city has a football team every 1 km away, it's free. It's no use having a domestic league that grows in audience but doesn't have a base formation.

  5. Here is the thing, American athletes who are elite choose to go into other sports that are way more popular in that country. That is slowly changing however and the MLS is gaining support every year.

  6. Football is and always has been a poor mans game. Most countries have footballers than come from poorer backgrounds etc and are not generally the sons of lawyers who pay for the privilege.
Football is based on merit in Europe and through the rest of the world. If you’re not good you don’t play. Players earn their spots and there’s much more competition for spots on a team. I live in a fairly small city and there’s probably a hundred amateur football teams as well as a pro club. It’s everywhere here.

“The sheer size of the US makes it hard to scout”
As if Brazil isn’t a fairly poor country in comparison which has always produced brilliant footballers and teams.

  7. Simple, the best athletes are taken up by Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey. The rest go to track and fields, lacrosse, tennis, combat sports, etc.

The best soccer players from the US probably go abroad instead of staying here. So for US men’s soccer, you have what’s left behind.

  8. We don't, our best athletes predominately play other sports. Shit isn't that difficult to figure out. A better soccer culture could only help.

  9. They can make as many excuses as they want they just can’t compete with other countries in major sport that people actually care about. Therefore went to make up their own sports so they couldn’t lose

  10. US football / Soccer federation needs 3 things to do. First talent scouting Nation wide. Second encourage clubs to built academies like in European top leagues. Third and already tried but not proceed further is to enroll anybody entitle to represent USMNT. Klinsman tried it with some German Americans with some success. US got to the second round of WC in 2014 and lost out to Belgium because Chris Wondowloski or what ever his name missed a sitter.

  11. The lack of a big league probably doesn't help. Why would a great player in the US play for the poorly regarded national team when he could become rich and famous, play alongside equally skilled players in challenging matches in overseas leagues?

  12. Americans (british descendants) create a sport call it the same name as the English game even tho they mainly use their hands…. soccer moms is a thing in America…. yet “soccer sucks” closest to American football we have in the uk is when we throw a rugby ball 1 handed

  13. It's not because US men suck at soccer. But the quality of world soccer is way better than women soccer. The competition is really tough. I can assure that a men's team with rank more than 100 can easily beat women's World champions at least with a 10-0 scoreline. Even the U15 boys had beaten them. The USWNT is mediocre compared to men soccer teams world wide. And other teams in the women soccer are worse than USWNT. It's not even up to the quality of B division men's soccer.

  14. I dont think the size of the country matters that much. What matters is a good scouting system. For example Brazil is pretty big on size, yet they are the most successful team in soccer/football.

  15. It's simple, no one cares about soccer. The systems that find the best MLB, NFL, and NBA players are already in place and they are applied to soccer. We've already found the best talent and they can't compete with the rest of the world.

  16. Yeah that's why all of our players on the national team start in top flight leagues in Europe. The question should have been why had the US system been behind other countries for so long? This just added to a stupid perception of our players and fans once again…

  17. I’ll tell you why? Because all of the best athletes in the U.S. choose American football or basketball. You can play soccer when you’re three or four years old here. At least where I’m from, elementary football coaches scout out little league soccer games and convince the kids parents to move them from soccer to American football the moment they turn seven. Why? Because American football is a massive business as early as middle school in some parts of the U.S..
