There was a lot of excitement down at Tim Hortons Field tonight as soccer fans watched one of the biggest matches ever played in Hamilton. Team Canada beat the USA and has moved this country one step closer to the World Cup.
Canada hasn’t seen this much soccer success in decades according to Michael Naraine from the sports management program at Brock University. «Canada is now on the brink of qualifying for a men’s World Cup.» He says that Team Canada has the potential to finish first in this division.
Soccer fan Justin Johnson the Team Canada is having so much success due to players such as Bryon Munic and John David. «These are just amazing athletes that are doing so much right now so it’s really really cool to have them on the Canadian team.» Johnson played for the Canadian national team when he was a kid and says soccer has gained popularity in this country since then for a variety of reasons. «It’s relatively cheap to play, parents can put their kids into it. All you really need are chin pads and a ball and you’re good to go whereas with a lot of these other sports there’s quite the investment in it.»
Today’s game is not a make it or break it for Team Canada. They still have to play a few more games in this tournament.
