Are the U.S. women's soccer team players paid less? The gender pay gap explained | The Fact Checker

In the world of women’s soccer, the team to beat is the United States. The Women’s National Team (USWNT) is ranked No. 1 in the world. They just won their fourth World Cup on Sunday. Fans give them the rock-star treatment. The president argues with them on Twitter. And they’re unquestionably more successful on the world stage than the Men’s National Team (USMNT).

But according to a class action lawsuit the team filed, the players are not treated as equals to the men’s national team. All 28 female players sued the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) — their employer — in U.S. District Court in March, alleging they are paid less than the men and are provided with less support, despite their consistent outstanding performance.

Can the women’s team claim credit for bringing in more revenue? Are the women players paid less than the men?

The Fact Checker obtained documents that weren’t previously publicly available and publicly available financial statements to unravel what’s going on here. Read more: Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube:

  1. Typical Liberals. They refused the same pay compensation that men get because they were afraid that only getting paid as you play will hurt your pockets. Now, they realize that what they refused was the better choice, they blame gender pay gap myth. I hope they get paid so much that the Women's soccer league can't afford to pay them any longer and they all lose their jobs.

  2. This is like saying popular football clubs like Manchester United or Arsenal shouldn't pay their players an off scale ratio in wages just because they don't play like the best team in the world. It's obvious that it's about revenue made from the club with respect to branding the franchise!

  3. Lotta misleading garbage in this video. Simply put, women don't put nearly as many asses in seats as men do. Less revenue = less pay. You already have a sweet little alimony deal where you get paid for doing nothing. If you want more, generate more revenue.

  4. They cried and complained loud enough and their wish came true. How bout ya read your contracts better next time and stop being mad at the deal Y'ALL agreed to as a team.

  5. This did not age well after we found out the men got paid less then the woman overall and per game. Then were offered the exact same deal as the men and denied it.

  6. It's not sexism or the patriarchy lol how dumb . Women instead of the crocodile tears about it's not fair there is a simple solution that would actually impact the league. You ready ? Go out and buy tickets to the games , buy merchandise . Men's sports are successful because men support them. Women's sports are less successful because women don't support them. Seems like your the reason that they make less .. also the women turned down the contract the men signed . The men took higher pay for no garenteed pay. So if the men don't play they don't get paid. The women wanted gareenteed salary's and benefits packages . So even if they didn't play any games. They would still get their salary's and benefits. So in order to do that they took less base salary to pay for the benefits and gareenteed salary's. So last year when the world cup was shut down because of covid and no games got played the women still got paid and the men didn't. But now that the women got paid for no games they now want the higher salary that the men are getting because they didn't have to lower their base salary to pay for the benefits package and garenteed salary's. So what the women are fighting for is not equal pay they want to get paid more and have special treatment . What they are doing is horrible behavior and then trying to manipulate the public and pretend that they are being discriminated against .

  7. But this is the US/USA Soccer league. Not the World Soccer League. The women are suing in the USA accusing the USA of not paying them equally but their suit is now based upon the World Cup payout which is not set or controlled by the US Soccer league

  8. Even if this pay gap nonsense was true or anything like the uswnt claim they are, it would still be on the uswnt for not negotiating to better terms with the us soccer federation, the uswnt union bargained collectively for this contract that they hate and claim discriminates them so badly. They claim they didn't have the same chance of getting the terms the men's team agreed to with the USF, but that is all on the uswnt union reps and the poor job they did at the negotiation table, which I believe they negotiated a good deal for the uswnt with benefits and guaranteed pay. You cannot agree to something that is going to give you finicial security short-term and then claim discrimination by that contract because the team performed much better and the grass on the other side of finicial security is so much more greener, and wealthier. Don't agree to something if it's discriminating against you, and then don't agree to a misogynistic contract for the guarantees just to turn around and claim all this discrimination because you want more money and is publicly known that the uswnt negotiated for safety and security instead of gambling for more pay and better bonuses.
Imagine getting a job and agreeing to a contract, just for you to work on that contract until you realize that Joe from the the department responsible for most of the companies profit and revenue, negotiated a better contract with the employer. And now you want everything Joe negotiated and is getting because you failed to accurately assess your worth while negotiating originally, and instead of waiting until next negotiating period, you go out and publicly claim discrimination from the employer. You cannot be mad at the fact that your union and reps negotiated for this contract and that it is publicly been stated by Many of the women pushing this false story of discrimination, that the contract that uswnt negotiated and agreed to was good for women and the uswnt.
But I guess when the goings good and stories of misogyny, discrimination, and racism among other hot topics, are being spread far and wide, then why not put your story out there and hey you could get more money and at a minimum you get alot of PR

  9. The women actually were offered the men’s deal and negotiated a better one. Then we’re offered the me s deal again and voted to continue their deal through March 2022

  10. Not the best "fact check" when you leave out guaranteed income versus play to get paid. How about severance pay: Women yes, men no. Child care? Same story. Women earned more in salary and compensation than the men in 2019. In 2020 the women earned their annual salary without playing any games. The men earned zero. And the women's team JUST voted to KEEP their current contract rather than accepting the same contract as the men. It is never going to be the same between men and women or between franchises in a league or from corporation to corporation. Accept that you have a damn good income for playing a game; doing something you love and can get endorsement deals.

  11. They were offered the exact same contract as the men and turned it down. They then negotiated for their current contract. Now US Soccer is has offered them pay every player man or women the exact same amount…. they turned that down. It's pretty obvious the women have zero argument anymore.

  12. Women's soccer team gets a GUARANTEED 3-4 MILLION$$ MINIMUM UP TO A MAX OF 6-7 MILLION PLUS FULL BENEFITS NOMATTER IF THEY PLAY OR NOT

MENS SOCCER TEAM GETS 12 MILLION$ ONLY IF THEY PLAY

MEANING WHEN COVID HIT AND BOTH MENS AND WOMENS GAMES WERE CANCELLED…….THE WOMEN STILL GOT PAID BUT THE MEN DIDN'T……
