We Are the Crowd

Cultural change can be an incredible thing to witness and examine. This is especially so when the change is something you’ve involved in, up close, and felt personally.

In 1974 as a young teenager living in Cincinnati I watched the World Cup at the Cincinnati Gardens. The games were shown on a movie screen on the basketball court with curtains draped all around. My mother managed to win a set of tickets from a local radio station and I got the thrill of my young lifetime.

The Netherlands were incredible during the tournament, smashing Argentina and Brazil on their way to the final against West Germany. I remember they looked to be the better side in the final, as well. But Neeskens and Cruyff couldn’t get the better of Beckenbauer and Sepp Maier. The West Germans were playing at home in Munich and they took the crown 2 – 1.

It seemed odd to be at the Gardens with all of those foreign voices. I was a clear minority in my own backyard.

It wouldn’t be until 1982 that the first World Cup match was televised in the United States. That’s an incredible statement given the tournament’s immensity.

Today, 36 years after the West Germany World Cup, I sat in a bar in downtown Denver watching England and the U.S. battle to a 1 – 1 draw. The odd thing wasn’t that I expected a good game. American soccer has made great strides and our guys play for some of the best professional clubs in the world. No, what was odd was to sit in a bar in the middle of the U.S., overflowing with people singing, chanting and cheering for one side tons more than the other. Hours before the match started – and I do mean HOURS – you could hear chants of «U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A» and my favorite song «Ole, ole, ole, USA, USA.»

The crowd were so loud when the teams were shown on television before they came onto the field that my ears hurt. And when the players hit the pitch it didn’t let up.

I can honestly say, as a veteran of several ’70s and ’80s hard rock concerts, when Robert Greene mishandled Clint Dempsey’s shot and allowed the U.S. to draw level, I have never heard a louder cheer.

I asked several people around me before the game what they expected and I was consistently surprised by their responses. «I’ll take a draw, but I think we can win,» was repeated to me multiple times. Expectations were very high for the U.S. team, in spite of what the media might have told you. And there couldn’t have been any doubt as to their allegiance. Most people were wearing a U.S. National Team jersey, with many wearing a headband and carrying flags.

The media will have you believe that soccer doesn’t matter in the U.S., that it never will. But the media like this story because the game doesn’t fit into the American Consumerism mould. There are two halves with 45 minutes of uninterrupted play. No TV timeouts. No breaks on the field. In the U.S. the media can’t sell the sport so it continues with its «soccer isn’t important» mantra. The corporate shills can’t find a way to take over the game so they want you to believe it – the game – doesn’t matter. In fact, they will tell you that hockey is the fourth major sport in America, even though soccer has gotten better ratings on television for several years now.

Fado’s is in downtown Denver, across from Coors Field. It is filled with Guinness, wide screen TVs in every corner and, on this day, it was filled with fans screaming and cheering for the U.S. National Team on the world’s biggest stage. But Fado’s was not unusual or unique. Several friends have told similar stories from other places throughout town. There has been a shift in our culture, in spite of what the media say. Football does matter. It is relevant. And it’s here to stay.

You don’t find groups of eight or nine showing up at an Irish pub at 7:30 in the morning to make certain they get a seat for a 1:30pm game, nor do you find women screaming for a yellow card after a bad tackle, unless your football culture has progressed beyond the «soccer doesn’t matter» meme.

At the end of the match I turned to one of my English friends who smiled and said, «After more than 15 years of living here I never thought I’d see this. I feel like I’m in a pub in London.»

This is not 1974. We no longer huddle around in small groups to watch other countries play a foreign sport. We’ve made the sport our own both on and off the field. We have sewn it into the fabric of our culture and we’ve sewn our culture into the fabric of our game.

England go ahead in the fifth minute of the game and then try to protect what they have. But that isn’t the U.S. style, is it? We are a nation that always wants more. We are tied to consumerism as tightly as the Italians are tied to pasta and the English to tea. The beauty – and the treachery – of American soccer is that we won’t sit back and defend, defend, defend when leading. If we’re one goal up we want to be two up. And we play like it. That’s who we are. We started with so little a short time ago and we have moved to the point where our culture now shows through on the field. If the American culture isn’t about never giving up and always searching for more then how else do you describe us? Forget the merits of those traits and whether you like them or not. They are us. And they are reflected in our play on the pitch.

Regardless of how the team ends up in this tournament, it is exhilarating to watch how grown up we’ve become about the sport and our place in it. We now demand excellence. We expect it. And, whether the media like it or not, we are no longer a single voice in a large crowd. We are the crowd.

Choose Soccer For Fun

Is your child the normal sort? Does she or he like to run about, climb on the monkey bars, swing about the merry-go-round and loves a ball. Which team sport are you going to sign him/her up for? I recommend soccer. Why soccer? In the world of soccer there is room for everyone. Everyone plays. That is the great attribute of youth sports. You don’t have to be good to play. Skill level is not a factor. Players are rotated in and out according to specific guidelines. Each player gets at least half a game to get a foot on the ball. And when they do? The whole family goes to CHUCK E CHEESE.

Soccer is an easy game to learn. The young beginner can learn it easily, both by practicing the drills, and by observation. Most of the younger teams play a version my husband and I like to call «swarm soccer.» We are amused and delighted by the efforts these young players give to just getting the ball down the field, all together. There is generally little or no passing, and the strategies and skills of the older player are still a few years off. But the team does drive the ball down the field, and everyone is part of scoring a goal.

The health benefits of soccer are these: increased fitness due to the nearly constant motion and activity required by running up and down the field. I have heard it called a heart-healthy game. Increased strength, flexibility and endurance are a few other benefits of this sport. Playing outdoors is also a big plus. Improved coordination results.

Soccer is a good team learning experience. Learning how to be part of a team takes practice. Making friends, practicing passing drills, being part of a team effort, the young player learns that life is not a solitary journey. The young player will begin to appreciate the concept of sharing the ball and receiving help as a positive aspect of winning.

Soccer requires little more than a ball and a few friends. It can be played one’s whole life. In time, the game becomes more complex, the skill levels more advanced. Enrolling your child in a program that is carefully managed, with the focus on the child’s enjoyment and development will yield long-term benefits, both physically and mentally.

Title: Sport Scholarships in America

Soccer Scholarship in the USA

Everybody is starting to ask you ‘So, what are you thinking about studying?’ and the only thing you’re thinking is ‘I want to see the world and play soccer (preferably on a scholarship)!’. What if you could combine both? And, even better, make your parents happy by earning a widely-recognised degree along the way? Sounds too good to be true? Well, United Sports USA has sent hundreds of soccer players to different parts of the US to pursue their dream of traveling and studying all the while playing their favorite sport.

Are you passionate about soccer and would love to be surrounded by the best facilities, equipment and coaches available? Would you like to be part of the American college system where they are starting to produce some of the best soccer players in the world? Would you like to play at a highly competitive level and travel all over the US with your fellow teammates? Studying abroad and becoming a student-athlete will be one of the biggest challenges you will face, but if you are an ambitious young soccer player it is simply something you can’t pass up!

The key is to not sit around and wait for a soccer scholarship to just happen. Give us a call or send an e-mail to one of our sports consultants, all of whom are former student-athletes.

Be proactive: apply now and sign up for an assessment game and who knows where it could take you…

Golf scholarship in the USA

You love Golf. Otherwise you would not have landed on this page. You also love the prospect of earning bachelor’s degree over the next few years and landing your dream job. The thing is, by getting a golf scholarship in the USA, you could do both at the same time!

Finding the perfect scholarship that suits your needs is not an easy task. This is where our experience and expertise at United Sports USA can make sure you get the right placement! Playing collegiate golf in the US might sound scary and exciting at the same time, and it should! Do not underestimate the amount of time you will spend on (and off!) the golf course – studying for exams and handing in assignments is simply par for the course. Being a student-athlete is not easy, but the most rewarding things usually never are. If this is something you would be interested in pursuing, why not give us a call or send us an e-mail and talk to one of our staff members, we would love to hear from you or your parents.

Swimming Scholarship in the USA

If you’re in the process of looking up swimming scholarships that probably means that you roughly know what you will get yourself into. It is not a secret that swimming is an extremely competitive sport. Your training will consist of early morning sessions in the water and land sessions (mostly strength and conditioning) in the afternoon. Going to lectures and having assigned homework throughout the week mean that your days will be fully booked. Needless to say, your commitment and love for the sport needs to be strong if you want a swimming scholarship.

At present, the UK only has 22 Olympic sized swimming pools for aspiring young Olympians to train. In comparison, in the US there are currently over 500 swimming programs on offer. All of them boast an Olympic sized pool and first class diving facilities for their student-athletes. In addition, there you will benefit from continuous support from coaches and sports-specific dieticians and physios. As a result, the University of Michigan, for instance, produced the highly decorated Olympian Michael Phelps.

Do you need help showcasing your abilities? If so, feel free to get in contact so we can help start the process.

Rugby Scholarship in the USA

Why in the world would you play and want a rugby scholarship in the US, you say? Isn’t ‘American Football’ their version of Rugby? Well, rugby is one of the fastest growing club sports across college sports campuses, with an increase in 14% in just two years.

Playing rugby in the American college system will make combining the passion you have for your sport as well as working towards a bachelor’s degree in your chosen field of study extremely convenient (for the lack of a better term). You never need to worry about whether you’ll have time to train or time to study. Your schedule is specifically set in a way that you can manage to excel in both. Does the idea of joining on of the 900 college rugby teams (both male and female) appeal to you? Then don’t hesitate to contact one of our sports consultants, all of whom are ex-student athletes themselves.

Tennis Scholarship in the USA

Have you ever heard of Andy Roddick, Arthur Ashe or Althea Gibson? Do you know what they all have in common? They were all student-athletes at American colleges in the early stages of their careers. This enabled them to keep playing Tennis at a highly competitive level all the while earning a widely-recognized degree. A tennis scholarship that perfectly suits your needs will bring you one step closer to your dream.

The thing about colleges in the US is that training sessions fit around the student-athlete’s schedule. This creates the perfect environment for students to excel in their sport with world-class facilities and equipment. In addition, it encourages and pushes them to excel academically. Their programs are designed so that students can succeed in both, providing they have the right mentality and drive to do so. Does this sound like something you would like to be a part of? Then feel free to contact us and talk to one of our (ex-student-athlete) sports consultants to help you start the process.

How to Persuade Youth Players in the USA That Soccer is the Best Sport to Play

Soccer is the most popular sport in almost every country in the world. That is unless you live in the USA where football, baseball and basketball are more popular. As a soccer coach the problem is therefore how to get youth players interested in playing soccer rather than the other sports.

Firstly we need to look at the reasons as to why other sports are more popular than soccer in the USA. One of the main reasons is spectator appeal. Local football, baseball and basketball are televised and promoted in every major city in the US. Young athletes watch this and associate with their heroes. Another reason is the money available in the professional game is much more in the American sports than in soccer. As a result, more young sports players aspire to earn their living with a high income in the American sports.

Not that soccer is a poor mans sport. Wages for soccer players around the world are now on the increase. For example 2 of the best soccer players in the world Christiano Ronaldo and Robinho are reported to be on $200, 000 and $320,000 per week respectively. David Beckham who plays for LA Galaxy is also high up there with the top soccer player earners. Although the interest in soccer is growing in the US among young sportsmen, the sport cannot compete as yet with the publicity, advertising and hype of the American sports.

The question is how to persuade young players in the US that soccer is the best sport to enter. Here are a few good reasons:

Soccer is a sport that any player can play and be successful in. As in football where physique and size is a major factor, in basketball where it is very advantageous to be well over 6 feet tall, any player can be successful in soccer no matter what size or physique a player has. Big and strong players can find positions as defenders, midfielders or forwards. Small players can find positions as forwards and wingers and develop skills to be successful in these positions. Slower players can also find positions, especially in midfield. There is a place for everyone who has the desire.

The involvement in the game is much greater in soccer than it is for other sports. In football there are so many stoppages in the game. Some players like the kickers may only have very limited involvement in the game. In soccer, even if your team does not have the ball, everyone has to hustle back to defend. Even the forwards have to defend from the front. Defenders when not defending have to support the midfield and forwards.

Soccer is very fast paced with almost continuous involvement. Basketball is probably the most similar of the American sports to soccer, the biggest difference being the size of the court to the field.

As well as speed, strength and stamina, skill is of the utmost importance in soccer thus producing an athlete with more rounded attributes. At youth level you will often find that youth soccer players often excel in the other American sports.

A good way to get youth athletes more interested in soccer is to get them watching high-class professional games on TV. The English Premier League is probably the best to watch as it is fast paced with a high skill level. Many of the best players in the world play in this league. There are several TV stations that show these games like Fox Sports World.

Also it would be good to get prospective youth soccer players to go to a few of their local college soccer games or semi pro games if there is a team in the area,

And then there is that magical feeling of scoring a goal with the goal celebration to follow. Soccer is certainly on the increase in the USA. The game produces leaders with more all round ability than the US sports. Success in soccer can lead to worldwide acclaim as players like Brad Friedel who plays in the English premier league has shown.
