Is Gaming Becoming a Sport in the United States?

The amount of video game use we see in society today is arguably inescapable. Mobile games such as; Candy Crush, Game of War, or Clash of Clans, record daily revenues in the millions, and someone is bound to recognize one if not all of these game names. This exposure to gaming in everyday light seems to be bringing in a new and unseen age in gaming, where gaming could be seen as a sport.

Ever since the first two people booted up «Pong» on the Atari 2600, gaming has been competitive. When you think about it, playing a game of soccer and playing a video game aren’t all that different. The object is always to win the game but the level of competition and players in the game can vary. Growing up I played Call of Duty on a fairly competitive level but I had no idea how big the competitive gaming industry would grow to be. The growth in this industry can be traced to a number of factors. The financial growth in the gaming industry has been incredible. The recent stance that «nerd culture» has taken in the popular media through means such as The Big Bang Theory. The push by people who genuinely enjoy gaming culture and want to see it get a spot in the limelight has brought gaming into everyday life for the general public.

So what is causing video games to turn into a source of entertainment that people would watch from home like they would football or soccer? The answers might surprise you. In July of 2014 «Defense of the Ancients» or DOTA was played by teams around the world for a community raised prize pool totaling $10,923,980 U.S. dollars. Teams of five would play against one another and eliminate the competition as they moved towards the grand finals and the ultimate prize of first place. While this was the fourth tournament of this type hosted by the games creators, it was the first time it was televised by ESPN 3. ESPN was pleased so much by the results of the coverage they agreed to follow up the next year. It is crazy to think that within the next few years we might see coverage of video games on Sports Center. Unlike ESPN which is only showing you content on competitive gaming during big tournaments, streaming is available all the time. Twitch TV being the main website that comes to mind. Streaming sites allow content creators to show what is happening live on their computers to audiences who can join in the conversation with a chat group function as they watch their favorite steamers/players play live. The potential for growth through an avenue like this is enormous. Just think, you could watch a TV show and chat with fellow fans of the show from all around the world with great ease, all while being able to communicate with content creators.

We know what is bringing gaming into the sports arena, but what is keeping it out? Well it is just not quite time for electronic sports (E-Sports) to become a household name, at least not in the United States. South Korea may be an example of what is to come in terms of E-Sports in the United States. Say the name «Star Craft» and nine times out of ten, a Korean will know what you are referring to. The game Star Craft is practically a national past time of South Korea. The game is featured on cable television and is even featured on a few apps offered by Microsoft’s Xbox, which is a direct competitor to the PC gaming market that Star Craft belongs to. Players in Korea are treated like celebrities, signing autographs, taking pictures with fans, and appearing on talk shows from time to time. Now if I were to tell this to the average American, more than likely the response would be along the lines of «Are you serious?» It’s that big of a deal over there?» Yes, E-Sports in Korea and to a lesser degree, China and Japan are already booming industries. So why hasn’t gaming already become a large industry in the United States where most of these games are made? Americans tend to like different games than the Asian players do. Americans tend to like fast paced shooters, such as Call of Duty or Counter Strike, while Asian players tend to favor strategic games such as Star Craft or DOTA. The problem with shooters is that less strategy is involved. Think of the two genres as an approach to an American football game. While both genres have a well-defined goal like in football the strategic games feature ways to counter movements of other players or their choice of how to move toward their goal via tech choices or character choices. In football, if the defense sends a blitz, you try to counter that blitz by getting the ball to a receiver who is open, or run the ball in the opposite direction of the blitz. There is no correct way to approach the defense’s strategy, and the offense can still make choices on how to approach the situation. The same cannot be said about shooters, there simply isn’t enough depth in gameplay to give watchers new ideas about how they can apply techniques used by professionals into their own gameplay.

Professional gaming is on its way to becoming a real sport in the United States. With air times on ESPN and through the popularization of gaming in everyday life within five or ten years we might see a good chunk of people walking around with E-sport’s team jerseys. Due to the trends of gaming in the U.S. it will likely take radical changes in gameplay to keep viewers watching and to get more of the public interested, but it is feasible. It will take the work of dedicated fans of the sport to push gaming further into the public eye but from what we have seen in the past few years it’s clear that gaming will be considered a sport in the near future.

Can Thierry Henry Bring the MLS to the Next Level?

Soccer has been a growing sport in America over the past ten years and this is mainly due to the effort put in by the MLS. They’ve had many different marketing tactics throughout the years; some have worked, some failed. However, they’ve come up with a new tactic of bringing in some of the biggest names in soccer, like Thierry Henry and David Beckham. Will this help to grow the sport and the league in the USA?

These guys are big time players. Any soccer fan knows David Beckham and Thierry Henry. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, you know David Beckham. I can’t say the same for Henry. This is following the same idea of the NASL, when Pele and other legends came to NY to play for the Cosmos. If history really repeats itself, then this formula should work!

I’m a pretty big soccer fan, although I’ve only been to a couple MLS games since its inception. However, I’m honestly curious to see Henry play. I can see this getting me out to a game, but not sure it will make me want to go all the time. I’d personally rather watch the England Premier League on TV. But, there’s a chance!

There are many fans that love the game like I do and are itching to see Henry play. I’d have to imagine that a portion of them will want to see more as they’ll be impressed. It is good soccer! Then there are the fans that think its retirement for these legends, which is pretty much the truth. But that doesn’t mean they won’t perform! These guys are competitors and I can’t imagine they don’t leave it all on the field.

Then there’s the fan that would just like to go see a game if given the chance; the casual fan. These fans probably don’t know too much about Thierry Henry! So is bringing in these big players going to help grow the sport for casual fans? I don’t think so.

If the MLS had been created before the MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL things would be different today. Unfortunately, there’s too much competition and the casual fan is probably a hardcore fan of one of those leagues.

Many people ask why soccer is so big in other countries. The answer is simple; they don’t have other major leagues! Soccer is their NBA, MLB and NFL combined. That will obviously never happen in the States, but they don’t need that to be successful.

The MLS has been faced with many challenges and they’ve come very far since they’ve started. From the time they’ve started to know, there’s been a major expansion and growth of the sport. The players have also improved. Soccer is the most popular sport played amongst kids, so I believe it starts there. Keeping their interest is crucial and by providing role models like Beckham, Landon Donovan and Henry can really help keep kids going.

How Taekwondo Can Help Football and Ice Hockey Players

Team sports are extremely popular worldwide because of their dynamic game play. But few other team sports are as popular as football and ice hockey. To clarify a common source of confusion by ‘football’ I mean soccer, and I am using the world football simply because the entire world excepting the USA refers to soccer as football. Some have called football the king sport because of the fact that it is simple to understand, it’s great fun and people know about it anywhere you go.

Ice hockey also has great popularity in many nations and it would probably be popular worldwide if it was easier to find ice in the hotter regions of the planet. All jokes aside, ice hockey is a serious team sport loved both by players and fans for its exciting style, elaborated tactics and the great skills needed to be a good hockey player.

As a Taekwondo instructor I have worked a lot with football and ice hockey players. The reason why such professional players would choose also to train in martial arts and especially taekwondo is that it helps their performance in their own sport. Taekwondo (TKD) is a famous type of martial arts mostly dominated by fast and explosive kicking techniques. For this reason, taekwondo training will help footwork, quickness and balance all very important both for football and ice hockey players.

The most important thing that a player can get with TKD training is flexibility and that helps prevent injuries especially knee and foot injuries. Feet and knees are essential for football and hockey alike. Both sports demand agility and often strain the athletes causing terrible injuries. Unfortunately it is common for football players and hockey players to suffer accidents during the game which sometimes prevent them from playing long periods losing time, training and money.

Not all the taekwondo styles are equal; my personal opinion is that a school that focuses on the Olympic style of sparring is the best choice for football players because training is focused on using legs, hips and the whole mid section.

If you are thinking of complementing your football or ice hockey training with taekwondo martial arts training the best thing is to find a good taekwondo school and talk with an instructor.

Because different players have different needs you should ask the instructor two basic questions:

1 How will taekwondo training help me?

2 What kind of taekwondo training do you provide?

For any questions or comments about finding good taekwondo schools don’t hesitate to contact me.

Yours,

Markku Parviainen

Beating Tips For Slime Soccer

World Cup Slime Soccer is like actual soccer in general, the difference is slime soccer is two dimensional, with 1 (semi-circular) player on every team, tiny nets, a wall on each side and a quite smaller field. You have an option to play with two players for a minute, two minutes or eight minutes. Plus you can have a chance to play another by pressing «World Cup». If you see a line under each net, do not go on the one under your net for too long because if you do, you will be «pinged» and your opponent will earn the point.

During the qualifying round, the game will be played against either with Argentina, Belgium, Australia, Iceland, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Cameroon or Denmark. It will be a 30 seconds game and not that hard to beat, especially if you know some soccer ball tricks and how to beat it. Primarily, do not go and grab the ball easily, instead, let your opponent to bring it to you. Have the patience to wait for it. One bet soccer tip is at a right time, with appropriate jump, it will go into the net. If it’s in the air, no better trick awaits your opponent.

In the quarter finals, the game will be played against Denmark, Ecuador, Mexico, France, USA, Italy, Japan or Russia. It is a two minutes game with extra time if deemed to be necessary.

For the Semis, it will be against either with Russia, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa or South Korea. Same with 2 minute game with extra time if necessary but this time more defensive and smarter.

In the finals, the game is against either with South Korea, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay, Brazil, and England, Germany or funny thing called the Night Elves. It is a 5 minute game.

FIFA World Cup Quarter-Final Preview – Ghana Vs Uruguay

Uruguay and Ghana meet in Johannesburg, on Friday in a match to decide who will be one of the four semi finalists of this edition of the World Cup. Uruguay qualified for the quarter final, for the first time in 40 years, after Luis Suarez scored twice against South Korea in their 2-1 win over the Asians.

Earlier Suarez was the lone scorer against Mexico in Uruguay’s group A encounter with the North Americans. Uruguay have come a long way in International football, after they failed to qualify for the 2006 edition of the World Cup. Apart from Suarez, in Diego Forlan, Uruguay have an exciting talent that gives their attack the solidity to go with their strong defence that has only conceded one goal in four matches.

Playing 3 strikers, including Edinson Cavani, the 2-time champions hold the edge over Ghana who are in only their 2nd World Cup appearance, in South Africa.

Ghana were drawn in a formidable group that had Germany, Australia and Serbia, besides themselves. After a 1-0 win over Serbia, Ghana drew 1-1 against Australia, before going on to lose by a solitary goal to Germany. Considering that both their goals had resulted from penalties, and that Australia were a man short, owing to a red card suspension, Ghana were an unlikely entrant to the big boys’ round of 16.

But any doubts about their pedigree was set to rest by their superior showing against  USA. Boateng put them ahead early in the match, and USA had to wait until the second half for a Donovan equaliser, via a penalty. Then Asamoah Gyan came to the party, scoring his third goal of the tournament in extra time, to cement Ghana’s place in the quarter final.

Jonathan Mensah and Lee Addy are young players brought into the team by coach Rajevac to join hands with the core of star players that took Ghana to the African Cup of Nations final. In fact, bigger stars  like Stephen Appiah and Sulley Muntari have not always been in the starting eleven.

The youngest team of this World Cup, Ghana were too fast on their feet for the Americans. Apart from Gyan, Ghana must also thank their keeper Richard Kingston who has had an outstanding tournament. Luis Suarez has been Uruguay’s star player with 3 goals in the 4 matches played so far. Apart from his goal scoring ability, Suarez also has great ball skills, and should keep the Ghana centre halves on their toes, in Friday’s quarter final.

Asamoah Gyan has great ball holding skills and his scoring volley in the USA game should have silenced his critics who doubted his ability to score in open play.

No change is likely in the Uruguay team that beat South Korea. The attacking 4-3-3 formation has Forlan offering midfield support to the strikers led by Suarez. Cavani on the right flank will be expected to get the ball ino the box from wide. The back four will be protected by Perez, who has Rios and Pereira for company.

Gyan will be the lone striker of a Ghana squad that will miss Jonathan Mensah and Andre Ayew, both out of the quarter final owing to suspension. Either Lee Addy or Isaac Vorsah could take Mensah’s place as defender, with Muntari in for Ayew. Though Ghana have been determined and shown a competitive streak that most teams would envy, their inability to score goals gives Uruguay the advantage in what should be a positive fast paced encounter.

Rugby – Gaining Significant Momentum in the United States

Where does rugby fit in the grand scheme of American Sports? Up until recent history the United States has paid little interest to sports outside its borders. Avid American sport goers have really taking stride in bringing soccer into the mainstream; however that’s caught on with little degree of popularity – although optimism was spiked during the past World Cup in 2006. Another sport, cricket, which is tremendous in India, South Africa and Pakistan is also feeling the heat of irrelevance – when Americans were asked about the very fundamentals of cricket over 90% could not decipher what instruments, apparel or gear are used to play the game, (survey conducted by Zpryme Research & Consulting, LLC).

Another sport, cycling is still very much a recreational sport in the United States with a very small spectator following- especially since the retirement of Lance Armstrong. However, a sport traditionally foreign to the United States has been catching on in the United States, much to the surprise of many athletic apparel companies like Adidas and Nike is Rugby. «According to USA Rugby, the sport has grown 15 percent annually the past four years, with the biggest and most rapid increase in the youth sector.»Rugby has also exploded in the Northeast and out in the west with many adolescents and high schools – a wonderful primer before entering the club sport at the university level. «The number of high school teams registered with USA Rugby has increased from 150 to more than 500 in the last six years, and there were 679 men’s and women’s college teams registered last year.»

However Rugby is still far from the revenue juggernaut, Mr. Gridiron, American Football. Still, Rugby is experiencing a strong exposure on most college campuses in the United States and already possesses a loyal legion with both current and past rugby aficionados. These core fans already do their best by employing viral marketing though mediums such as blogs, MySpace.com and university campuses – they loyal fans could easily increase the domino effect of rugby exposure if they saw their sport begin to surface in the mainstream athletic arena.

At a professional level, the United States is approaching decency in the game: they’ve qualified for the past three Rugby World Cups, and while they have yet to advance past initial play, have delivered hope in their attempts. The 2007 International Rugby Press Association Try of the Year was scored by an American, Takudzwa Ngwenya, who capitalized off an end-to-end transition play against the Springboks of South Africa by outrunning the 2007 international Player of the Year, Bryan Habana down the far wing.

The Future of Rugby?

If rugby continues to grow at its current rate, there will be approximately 1,500 high school teams within the next five years or so. This increase in high school activity will lead to a higher interest in collegiate rugby, and this seasonal cycle will lead to mounting interest with the potential to fund a professional rugby league similar to that of the AFL (arena football league).

Further inspiring the growth of rugby is the news that «USA Rugby and Canterbury of New Zealand (CCC) announced today that CCC has become the official kit provider and exclusive apparel licensee to USA Rugby through May 2012. Under the agreement, CCC will supply USA Rugby with apparel for all Eagles teams, and also commits to the payment of performance bonuses through Rugby World Cup 2011. In addition, CCC will be launching a USA Rugby licensed leisurewear range that will be available to retail stores across America. CCC will also provide a three year academic/rugby scholarship to Loughborough University, one of England’s premier Universities.»

«By establishing a relationship with USA Rugby, CCC is pleased to lend its support and 104 years of rugby tradition and experience to the Eagles.» The future certainly looks bright for rugby in the United States. For those that are already fans – they should collectively make it a priority to spread their love for the game to the youth, so that one day it will not be uncommon to see it broadcasted daily on mediums such as ESPN Sports Center or in print in the sports editorial of their local newspaper.

Soccer on Satellite TV

Throughout human history people have competed against each other in different forms of sport. People pit themselves against each other to define themselves, to try and rise to their full potential, and even to solve disputes between societies. These competitions have evolved along with humanity. Sports spectatorship has always been an integral part of this as well. For the ancient Olympics a truce was held throughout Greece so spectators and athletes could travel to the games. People identify with their teams, which creates a sense of community and excitement that is impossible to replicate.

Soccer is by far the most popular sport in the modern world. It captivates the hearts and minds of millions of people, from Mexico to Brazil to Nigeria to Korea. Fans are forced to wait in stadiums for hours while opposing sections disperse, yet intense rivalries still inspires riots and celebrations that shut down normal life. Wear the wrong shirt in Manchester on match day and you might start a fight. In Buenos Aires, there are neighborhoods that should be avoided wearing the wrong colors. The world cup is the most widely viewed event in the entire world. So with all this excitement, all this energy and allegiance, why is it so hard to catch a soccer game on television in the United States? It’s a nation comprised of people from the entire world. Shouldn’t there be a way to watch the world’s most popular sport?

With satellite TV there is. Satellite offers a wealth of programming that can’t be found anywhere else. There is better access to more exclusive packages of sports programming, allowing you to keep up with the UEFA Champions League, the Premiership, Serie A, and more. No longer will you have to miss watching Ronaldinho and Barcelona take on Bayern Munich. There are also packages covering the quickly improving MLS, featuring growing numbers of international stars and expanding rapidly in the United States. League changes have brought in international superstars like David Beckham, who joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007.

With today’s high definition technology the picture on your screen of the game will also be better than ever. You might be able to pick out the actual panels on the ball as it’s making its way downfield. With satellite access to more HD channels than any other form of television, you will have a gamewatching experience better than any other. The detailed picture available these days makes some commentators say that it’s better to watch the game from home than the field!

What about those games that you can’t see because of work or some obligation, but at the same time you feel you can’t miss? After all, the time zone difference for many of those international games might mean that what you want to see is happening in the middle of night. Not to worry, modern DVR technology will allow you to preset your TV to record those high quality matches. Everything you want to see will be waiting for you to enjoy it at your pleasure. With satellite you not only can now catch the most important sports events, you can do it when it’s convenient for you.

Soccer Betting

Soccer (also called Futbol or European Football) betting is very popular in many

parts of the world. In fact, the only place that it’s not is the United States. The game

of soccer can be claimed as the world’s true sport, but the United States does not

enjoy soccer anywhere near as much as other parts of the globe. As with any other

game, it’s important to know the game before you put down your cash. Thanks to

the Internet keeping up with teams and getting information on foreign teams is a

snap. You can find some wild money lines in soccer.

If you are brand spanking new to soccer betting, you are in for a treat–and possibly

a headache. One thing that’s both good and bad is the number of leagues around

the world. It’s good because there is plenty of soccer action to wager on, but it can

be overwhelming at the same time. It’s recommended that you start by focusing on

the soccer league(s) in your region or a region that interests you. This will allow you

to become an expert in that area and you will do much better. Once you get the

hang of it, you can expand your horizons if you want.

To win more money and more consistently you will need to know how a soccer

game works–at least to some degree. The more you know about soccer and the

more you understand the flow, the better off you will be. This task can be

accomplished quickly be browsing some Internet websites and reading the data they

offer. While you are searching around, look for pages on some of the teams you

might be betting on. Specifically, look for any information on how they play the

game and anything about their scoring and defense.

The main question is about money. Can you make real money betting on soccer?

The quick answer is yes. Soccer presents some great opportunities for the informed

sports bettor. When you place a bet on a soccer match, you bet on the winner

outright. There is no point spread–although some sports books do proposition

bets with goals. You can also bet on the match ending in a draw, which happens

semi-frequently. Betting on the draw usually results in a nice payoff if it comes in.

Many draws will be +200 or higher.

The lines in soccer matches are usually pretty interesting. Matches that feature

teams who are close in talent have plus-money lines, which is different from other

sports. For example, you might have the favorite being a +125 and the underdog

being a +175. No matter whom you choose, you are getting value for your money.

Even if you are not experienced with soccer betting or soccer in general, it can

sometimes be easy to spot the big favorite. Teams that are overwhelmingly

dominant in a match might be -500 favorites. Obviously, there’s no value here and

smart sports bettors should stay away from such matches.

Here’s an example betting line.

West Ham United +120

Bolton Wanderers +175

Draw +225

As you can see, there’s value in all three wagers and the line is easy to interpret. It’s

important to note that typically, after 90 minutes of play, the game is final. The

sports book might not take Overtime, the Golden Goal rule and penalty kicks

(outside of regulation) into consideration.

Overall, soccer betting is definitely something sports bettors should look into. The

game gives sports bettors great value for their money and there is plenty of action

to go around. If you have not tried betting on soccer yet, give it a look. You just

might find your new moneymaker.

Landon Donovan Finds the Old Onion Bag

It was June 23rd, 2010 in South Africa and the U.S. soccer team faced Algeria. It was late into the game and American fans were starting to lose hope as it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen for them. Passionate soccer fans were heartbroken, considering the boys got robbed with a few calls and could have made it through with a few decisions made in their favor. Just when everyone was down, Landon Donovan comes to the rescue!

It was a must win situation for U.S.A. in their final game vs. Algeria. This game had American soccer fans biting their nails and caused many pits in stomachs. I know my stomach couldn’t handle it. They had some incredible chances, but nothing was falling for them. Once again, they even had a poor decision made by the ref which took a goal back from them.

England was playing against Slovenia as the U.S. played Algeria. If England won their match, it would force the U.S. into a must win situation. We all knew that England took a lead early in the game and it was unlikely that Slovenia would get the equalizer with England’s strong and experienced backline. As each minute ticked away, it seemed as if the American boys were going home.

In the 90th minute, the U.S. had another counter attack. But this time it actually meant something. The ball was moved from north to south and this play ended with one of the most theatrical moments in U.S. soccer history.

And of course it was Landon Donovan. The leader of the team steps up for the occasion. This goal, as well as the goal in their comeback vs. Slovenia only solidifies the argument that Landon’s the greatest U.S. soccer player of all-time.

With this incredible game winner by the U.S. team, it would put them in first place in their group stage. This means they avoid playing Germany in the 2nd round and will face Ghana. Although Ghana is very strong, they’re definitely no Germany. Not only did it mean we get the easier opponent, but finishing the group stage in 1st place is a first for the U.S. It’s a major accomplishment, especially with England in the group.

This team has more fight in them than other team I’ve seen in the World Cup so far. Hopefully they can bring the same level of intensity to Ghana. The winner of this match plays the winner of South Korea vs. Uruguay. And the winner of that advanced to the Semi-finals. We couldn’t ask for a better draw at this point!

If the U.S. brings their best game to Ghana, they should do just fine. With a win, soccer may just grow a bit more in the U.S. They’ve made it extremely exciting and I’m sure they’ll continue to give us something to talk about vs. Ghana.
