arguably the best US player ever and its amazing how close he came to not playing at all. growing up his older sister was a potentially world class tennis player and the family couldn't afford to develop both, they were gonna go with the sister and then she died. brain aneurysm, out of nowhere. after that the family was able to put their resources behind Dempsey, and its no wonder he played with a chip on his shoulder, a big reason he was there was that his sister died tragically. Something is very wrong with US soccer that it took that for him to get the opportunity to develop into the player he became.
