Taylor Twellman: 'We cannot do soccer the American way' | SVP | ESPN

After his viral rant, Taylor Twellman tells SVP that he «feels worse» about the circumstances surrounding the USMNT not making the 2018 World Cup, blaming the country’s «arrogant» attitude toward the sport as a primary reason for the struggles.

  1. He said America dominates all other sports? What? They dominate the games they create and literally no others ? and they have the best league in the world? WHAT? England alone has 2 leagues better than the NFL,NBA or NHL an whatever the baseball one is, I love American football, supported Seahawks since 2010 and watched almost all there games since but the NFL is not one of the best leagues and America definately doesn't dominate every sport other than football

  2. People complaining about US not having pro/rel system have no real knowledge about Geography. USA is a massive country with an area of 9 million sq. km which is significantly larger than England (130 thousand sq.km), Germany (357 thousand sq.km), Spain (500 thousand sq.km), France (543 thousand sq.km), Italy (301 thousand sq.km), and many other european nations combined .
Let's say USA does have a pro/rel system and teams from small local clubs of Oregon, North Dakota, Arizona,Texas, kansas, Florida, Wisconsin, Maine, West Virginia end up on the 3rd division.. (for Europeans perspective, it is like having teams from small towns of Ireland, Denmark, Latvia, Portugal, Serbia, Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Russia, Kazhakhstan, all in a 3rd division battling for pro/rel) Imagine the travel cost and travel exhaustion the team have to undergo every week, and for what..? to get promoted or demoted to a new tier which may not be as prestigious as the first tier.

  3. Are other American sports played so widely globally as soccer/football is, the answer is no.
If they were as widely played would America still be the best in the world possibly not.
Throwing money at sports only gets you so far.
Children all around the world are born with a love of football. When they learn to walk, they also learn to kick a football. It’s natural.
It’s also cheap, you just need a ball.
Americans need to get that children playing as soon as possible, keep those children fit and healthy, as well as good fun.
Football is fun to play, and if children are given a chance they will rock at it too. Start with the kids and in a few years the results will start to be seen.

  4. You don’t have the resources to be a football giant. You just have the money. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE. They all have money. But money isn’t the only resource, the will and want to be a successful nation is the biggest resource. If you don’t have the willpower to be a successful nation, you won’t produce better players which also means you won’t produce good coaches. Players are only as good as their coaches let them and if you don’t have good coaches, you won’t be successful.

  5. "We dominate every other sport"
Internationally besides basketball, track and field the answer is NO you dominate only in your self invented sports, in the rest the USA is behind (especially in men sports) :
    – collective sports (soccer, volleyball, handball, rugby, etc) => USA ?
    – tennis, ping pong, badminton, etc => USA ?
    – fighting sports (MMA, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Judo, BJJ, Karate, Boxing) => USA ?
    – motorsports (F1, WRC Rally, MotoGP, Man TT, etc) => USA ?
    – Wintersports => USA ?

USA a 331 million nation internationally being beaten by 70 million France, 90 million Germany (even sometimes by 17 million people The Netherlands) in most internatonally played sports.

A fact that most people outside the US bubble now.

Even in breakdance (you invented it), the USA has not won the crew world title since 1998
(Battle of the Year on Wikipedia as proof), where South Korea, France and Japan dominate US teams easily.

  6. MLS over paying to bring back, Dempsey, Bradley and Altidore had knock on effects. It sent a message to the Jordan Morris generation to just stay in MLS. You'll still be on the national team and get paid well.

  7. soccer can be amazing in the USA, but the head coaches it has cuts creativity and just wants passing!! if that made great players, why is C. Ronald, Messi, and Ronaldinho so great!!

  8. The arrogance comes when you realize we look at soccer like a poor man's sport. We deem ourselves better than soccer. I am not being mean but I am speaking of how an American views soccer. If I watch soccer, I can't help but to look at it with sympathy like I would seeing a handicapped person struggle

  9. We don't dominate is soccer because we have too many professional athletes playing other sports. Our best athletes don't play soccer. They play football, basketball, baseball and even hockey. Soccer just isn't as popular on a professional level here so the interest of the best athletes just isn't there. The only way to get better is to make the sport more popular. You're running around scratching for talent because all the talent is playing another sport. It's so obvious, why can't people see that?

  10. I think one of the main reason that the US soccer team is bad is that they don’t compete against any true rivals until the World Cup. When you participate only in the gold cup where your biggest contender is Mexico your players will hardly ever be pushed to a higher level.

That and the fact that the MLS overprices the players, which avoids any possible negotiation to premium European teams. Why pay 10plus millions for an unknown American player?

General public interest in the sport should also be a concern, but not as much as people may think, I mean it’s a country with 200 million people, I’m sure finding 30 talented players should be that hard.

  11. You steal the term "football" to the " helmet and armour UFC somewhat rugby-like weird sport" and named "American football".
So the God of Football punished the USA to
not make the name of football dirty.

  12. America dominates in every other sport…lol. The most popular sports in the world are football, cricket, rugby and basketball, America only dominates in basketball….the rest not even close! Gridiron and baseball is barely played anywhere else in the world, it’s a national sport only, in other words Americans play against themselves, ppft!

  13. I for one, have complete faith that the flood of Hispanic immigrants that comes here daily will lead the US to a World Cup. Actually, that's not a crazy thought at all, but the simple fact still is that the AVERAGE American couldn't care less about Soccer/Football. It's just a fact. Soccer is probably the 5th or even 6th most popular sport in the US.

  14. ……… How often due you hear ' …America is the greatest country in the world ' or ' … the greatest country there's ever been ' ….. everything the USA does is the best ? You hear this nonsense spouted by them everywhere …. in films, in TV, on news programmes, by politicians and then repeated by the citizens. Yanks, why do you do it, it only makes you sound foolish ?
You don't hear anything even similar by any other nations ….. especially those with a vast amount of history within the world. Just stop blowing your own trumpets and beating your chests. You take innovations, inventions and discoveries made by others and call it your own. There is so much that is not good about the USA. But just carry on with the good and learn from the bad …. but do it more humbly. If it is that good the world will see it by your actions . Isn't it better to be told by others you are doing well rather than you yourselves telling everyone else how great you are ? If you do good things people will like you, stop trying so hard …….. x

  15. Funny thing is that there are countries that have never had a WC team(talk less of winning it) or even played in their respective continental tournaments, they probably don't have football clubs/leagues close to the standards of the most popular ones in Europe, yet they have more passion for football/soccer than the USA. E.g. a lot of countries in Asia/middle east/Africa.

So being salty about not "dominating" in soccer like you do in women's soccer, basketball, baseball, e.t.c shouldn't be an excuse.

  16. Internationally the level of competition in CONCACAF is insanely low compared to South America or Europe, even low compared to Africa. Mexico is the most powerful opponent the US faces, and Mexico is weak compared to any South American country.

  17. The world sports are football (soccer), Cricket, Rugby, Tennis, Hockey, Basketball, Athletics. Etc. The US dont provide infrastructure for children to play freely in parks and streets. Too organised, restrictive and about money.
