The Benefits of Playing Soccer

The game of soccer, or the original «football» is one of the most popular sports in the world. Unlike American football or baseball, soccer is a sport that is played all around the world by people of all ages and background. What makes soccer so popular? It could be the easiness of play and set-up, the fact that it can be played anywhere with a large, flat surface and requires minimal equipment, in some cases just a makeshift soccer ball. Besides the fact soccer can be played in nearly any large, flat area, it is also inexpensive.

Soccer has made its way to the U.S. and like in other wealthier countries like those in Europe, the game of soccer has become a great investment of time and money. Kids of all ages play soccer from age five up through high school and college. Adult recreation soccer leagues are also popular.

In the U.S., soccer is a popular game to introduce young athletes to as it’s easy to learn and team camaraderie is established. Soccer is more than an activity for young children to use up all their energy. The act of playing soccer has numerous benefits making it great for people of all ages. If you’re on the fence about participating in soccer, here are the benefits of playing soccer:

Soccer Encourages Social Interaction

One can’t play or even have soccer practice, or at least a fun one, being by one’s self. Sure, you can practice shooting, but without a goalie, the practice won’t be as beneficial. Soccer is a team sport and requires one to effectively listen, communicate with and obey one’s coach and teammates.

Soccer promotes social interaction, which is very important for young children. Verbal, comprehension and decision-making skills are improved while playing soccer which will help kids as they become adults.

Soccer Encourages Teamwork and a Group Attitude

As mentioned earlier, soccer is a team sport, meaning each player is important to the team’s success. Every player must work on the skills needed to be the best player they can be in order to help their team do well. Soccer teaches players discipline and commitment to the team. This ability to think about how one’s attitude and actions affect others and putting others in front of one’s personal concerns and wants groom kids into adults who can better resolve conflict, be good teammates, coworkers and leaders. Being a part of a soccer team will force players to resolve differences, learn compromise and make amends for the betterment of the team.

Soccer Gets People to Stay Active

Soccer is a favorite sport for young athletes to get involved in as it is a good way for them to burn off all their energy. Beginning soccer is also great for small children as the rules are simple to understand and the players can be constantly engaged.

Soccer is a good cardiovascular workout, requiring players to be actively moving. The anticipation of blocking a shot, intercepting a pass or making an amazing shot on goal motivates players to run faster and harder than just going for a regular run. Soccer can indeed distract one from realizing they are getting exercise, which makes the game fun for those who would normally not be active or into fitness.

Both indoor and outdoor soccer require players to also get off the couch and onto the field. The act of «getting out» means less time laying on the couch binge watching TV shows or playing video games. The active lifestyle of soccer ultimately boosts one’s mood and attitude, improves one’s energy levels and mental health and reduces one’s risk of health issues.

Soccer is Good for One’s Health

Research has shown that playing soccer yields multiple physical, sociological and psychological benefits. Soccer involves cardiovascular exercise that strengthens the heart, improves blood flow, lowers stress, strengthens the lungs and tones muscles which improves the functioning and correct alignment of the skeletal system.

The sociological benefits of soccer helps one better interact with others and learn valuable skills like teamwork, dedication, responsibility and conflict resolution. The exercise of soccer lowers stress and improves brain functioning and boosts one’s mood, making one happier.

Soccer Players Are More Likely to Continue Playing

Those who play soccer are more likely to continue living a healthy, active lifestyle by continuing to play soccer. Even as adults, those who grew up playing soccer or who just started playing soccer are more committed to sticking to it than other forms of exercise such as running. There are multiple, possible reasons for this including the «team» aspect of soccer.

Soccer Can Reduce Stress, Especially Among Men

Studies have shown that playing soccer reduces one’s risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and falls. Similar studies have also concluded that playing soccer and running yield similar health benefits and mood enhancements. However, by participating in a soccer match resulted in less stress than by merely running.

Men, in particular experienced more worry when running than playing soccer. Running is an individual sport, with no team responsibility and less camaraderie. By playing soccer, men felt more motivated, involved and happy. Soccer requires participants to think about the next play as well as their teammates, which leaves little room and time for players to think about their personal problems and stressors.

Soccer is a popular world sport for many reasons including its ease of play and minimal equipment needed. Researchers have indicated that there are many other benefits of playing soccer including social interaction, teambuilding, an active lifestyle and improved physical, mental and emotional health.

Regardless of your age or playing abilities, there are soccer clubs and activities available in nearly every community. Simply sign up and stop by your local soccer equipment store to get the ball, cleats and shin guards you need.

Satellite TV – A Haven For Die-Hard Soccer Fans

The United States has one of the most formidable sports cultures on the planet. We give our schools access to some excellent facilities, and we promote sporting in general in a variety of ways in our society; with a country the size of ours, it’s hard not to understand why we are so athletic. Yet, if there’s one sport that hasn’t taken root in our country (at least to the level which many would like to see) it would have to be soccer (that’s football to the rest of the world).

Since professional soccer is still relatively nascent in the US, the possibilities of being able to catch a soccer game on the fly-your local bar, a street corner, at the station-are significantly slimmer than in other countries. And, since uninvitedly changing the channel at your local sports dive from the NFL Sunday Ticket to some European or Latin American soccer final would probably cause a bar fight (with me as the sole victim of aggression), soccer nuts usually don’t have a way to change the status quo, much less satisfy their hunger for some live game time.

Fortunately, there are one or two options for die-hard soccer fans looking to quench their thirst, though most cable and satellite TV customers would have no clue about it. Availability used to be relatively limited, but nowadays it is possible to get a channel that plays some local and international soccer included in one of the better-priced packages.

Fox Soccer Channel stands out as one of the most comprehensive ventures into the soccer-viewing market: with live games or at least highlights from just about every major competition in global soccer, you’re sure to be able to stay up to date on all your favorite teams. Like the name says, this channel is dedicated to soccer, all day, every day. If only more people could learn to appreciate the brilliance of this gift; but, alas, it is the easily kept secret of a few fanatics. Also available is GolTV, which has the rights to different competitions than Fox Soccer Channel, so there’s luckily even more for the picking.

Now, with luck, in a few years local fans will have learned to support their MLS team more, more cities will actually have an MLS team in the first place, and soccer culture will take its place rightful place within national sports culture. If this were to happen, then perhaps it will get easier to catch a moment or two on the fly of that game you needed to watch but couldn’t cut out the time for; and no, you won’t get evil glares from the fellow patrons of your local sports dive for merely suggesting to change from football to soccer-just don’t expect that they’ll be willing to do the favor yet. Maybe, just maybe, if the US were ever to win a World Cup title, then perhaps they’ll do the favor. Till then, our national team will have to keep training harder and harder.

Cuba – Olympic Sport And Dictatorship

Like Park Chung-hee (Asia/South Korea: 1962-79) and Idi Amin Dada (Africa/Uganda: 1971-79), Fidel Castro is a sports fanatic and enjoys watching all types of Olympic sports. Fidel Castro has visited the national team’s training camps, sports schools, National Schools Games and spent time with the students-athletes and Olympic players. Since 1990, the Cuban dictatorship has spent more than $80 million per year into Olympic sport. However, Cuba is not an Olympic paradise. Cuba’s modern sporting history has been marked by sporting defections.

Every dictatorship has a style of its own. Leonidas Rafael Trujillo had one: Dominican music. Francois Duvalier had one: Haitian culture. Kim Jong Il has one: the cinematography. He likes films as «Gone with the Wind», a famous film American. The dictator of North Korea wrote an essay «On the Art of Cinema».

The Idi Amin Dada regimewas notorious for torturing political prisoners, forbidding dissent and free speech. Under the dictatorship of Idi Amin Dada, about 350,000 people were killed. But he loves Olympic sports like Fidel Castro Ruz. During 1970s he had become an outspoken champion of sport in the Third World. I remembered that the Ugandan team won two gold, four silver and three bronze medals during the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand in 1974. Overall Ugandan team ranked tenth, before Wales, Trinidad Tobago, Tanzania and Jamaica.

Fidel Castro once said: «What has Cuba’s role been in the Olympic Games? What has it achieved? What has been the fruit of our efforts to promote healthy clean sports? At the 1972 Olympics, we finished 14th among 122 countries. At the Montreal Olympics in 1976–Juantorena remembers this well, and so do we–we finished 8th among 88 participating countries. In 1980, in Moscow we finished 4th among 81 countries; in 1992, in Spain we finished 5th among 169 countries; and in Atlanta, in 1996 we finished 8th among 197 countries. Could anyone refuse these figures». But under one of the world’s oldest surviving dictatorships, the sport has become a useful way for women and men to access to freedom.

Certainly, Cuban sport is a story of both frustration and miracles. The Cuban government reacted with increduly when in 1980 Roberto Urrutia, a weightlifter, unexpectedly announced his decision to seek asylum in the United States. At the age 14 Urrutia made weightlifting high top priority, and ten months later he established national records. Urrutia entered the 1975 Pan American Championship at the age of 18 and won gold medals for Cuba. In December, in Matanzas, he become the first Latin American weightlifter to obtain a World record. In 1976 he finally realized his dream of competing in the Olympics. Like Alberto Juantorena (track and field), Teofilo Stevenson (boxing) and Mireya Luis Hernandez (volleyball), Roberto Urrutia Hernandez, former member of Youth Communist Union, was a symbol of the Cuban Revolution. Roberto, was born on December 12, 1956, in La Havana, won 3 gold medals at the 1978 Weightlifting World Championships and ended world Soviet’s-year domination of international weightlifting. Certainly, he was voted Hero of the Year by Prensa Latina. Before the Moscow Olympic Games, Roberto Urrutia defected to the United States via Mexico.

In the past few years, we have seen a number of events take place: Taimaris Aguero, a player, came to seek freedom in Italy; Odelin Molina, an outstanding footballer from La Havana sought political asylum in the United States; and Dulce Tellez, a sportswoman, came to San Juan de Puerto Rico.

Aguero, who at 1,77, was considered one of the best female athletes in the Americas, at the age of 16 she become the youngest person ever to be a member of Cuban Team. During the 1993 World Junior Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Aguero finished first in the competition for best setter. When Tanya Ortyz, setter from 1987 to 1995, announced her intention to retire at the end of 1995, Aguero was considered a leading candidate for the post. Therefore, she was keywoman when Cuba finished first at the 1998 World Championship. In 2000 Aguero helped the Cuban team reach victory at the Olympic Games. If not the greatest setter ever, she is certainly the most celebrated in volleyball history. Nowadays Taimaris Aguero is one of the most remembered and dearest sportswomen by Cubans. Behind baseball, volleyball is the most popular sport in Cuba.

Dulce Tellez was named best player in the 2006 Pan American Championships in Puerto Rico. Under her leadership Cuba won the bronze medal in volleyball in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She left Cuba in July 2006–three months before the World Championships in Tokyo. Before the 2006 World Championships, Cuba was ranked 3rd in the world. Now it is ranked 7th. Meanwhile, Odelin Molina, was born on August, 1974, in La Havana, was one of Cuba’s best footballer and played the 1991 World Championship Under-16 in Italy. In 1995 he defected to the United States, where he lives now.

Why Indigenous Nigerian Coaches Cannot Handle The Super Eagles

The clamor for indigenous coaches to handle most especially the senior national team of Nigeria, known as the Super Eagles has been on for as long as I can remember. The issue of national pride is always cited as one of the major reasons why the exponents of this school of thought kept on with their agitation.

At a time, I was almost wooed into this school of thought, maybe in sympathy with the local coaches that have paid their dues as far as football achievement is concerned.

I was almost carried away by our major achievements in the cadet categories of the world cup most especially the under 17 category. Nigeria has won that trophy 3 times since the inaugural edition was held in China as far back as 1985, when an indigenous coach by the name of Christian Chukwu, himself a former captain of the national senior team, led a group of young unexposed boys to the Asian nation of China to put their names in the Guinness book of world record as the first country in the world to win this championship then being sponsored by Kodak.

Before they left the shores of Nigerian, no one gave them the slightest chance for success. When they finally returned home with the trophy, a lot of euphoria greeted their achievement. And just as stated earlier, this feat has been repeated two more times after the maiden edition, ironically in the same continent of Asia. First, it was China in 1985, then Japan in 1993 and the most recent one in Korea in 2007.

At these three occasions, our indigenous coaches were at the helm of affairs, first it was Chairman Christian Chukwu, then Fanny Ammun and recently the late Yomi Tella who died a few weeks after returning from a glorious outing in Korea.

In 1996, another exploit was achieved in the field of soccer by Nigeria in far away Atlanta, Georgia in the United States of America. There, an underestimated Nigerian side led by the Dutch man Bonfrere-Jo took the world by storm by winning an Olympic gold medal that has eluded the almighty Brazil since they registered their name as the greatest soccer playing nation in the world, having won all that there is to win in soccer at every level of the game expect at the Olympics (I am beginning to think that they are jinxed). Ironically, they were eliminated in the semi-final by Nigeria in an epic game which the bookmakers had already given to the Brazilians. The event that led to the elimination of Brazil in the soccer event of Atlanta Olympic game is a topic for another day.

The issue here however is that Nigeria won that soccer gold under the tutelage of a foreign coach, and it is on record that the two time Nigeria has won the African Cup of nations, first in 1980 was under a Brazilian known as Otto Gloria, the second time was in 1994 in Tunisia under the flamboyant and vocal Dutchman known as Clement Westerhof, it was this same man that qualified Nigeria to her first ever senior soccer world cup popularly referred to as USA 94. It was a double feat for the Dutchman who had earlier in the year won the African cup of nations in grand style, thereby sending a signal to the world about Nigeria’s preparedness to take her rightful place in the field of world soccer.

Why have the foreigners succeeded more than the indigenous coaches when it comes to the senior level?

I would want to proffer the reasons in two ways, first the administrative lapses in the Nigerian Football Association. Most people involved in the day to day running of the game of soccer in Nigeria, knows close to nothing about the game and its challenges. The Nigerian Football Association is thus politicized and is mainly used as an instrument of political gratification for electoral supports. The foreign coaches succeed because they are hired under a well signed and sealed contract, they are offered mouth watering contracts that help to motivate them into putting in their best.

When it comes to the local coaches, it is a different ball game. They are hardly given a concrete contract and when that even happens, a lot of interference from the powers that be in the sports ministry and the soccer ruling house makes decisions making by the indigenous coaches difficult. The issue of job security is another determining factor. Coaches are hired and fired at will, most of them being owed salaries for couple of months, and they are never to talk about such issues otherwise it would be seen as sabotage and an act of insubordination since these coaches are treated like ministry workers.

The issue of respect from the players is another kettle of fish when it comes to coaching the senior national team. Come to think of it, some of these professional players earn as much as Eighty Thousand British Pounds a week in their various European clubs, that translated to our local currency, runs into millions of Naira which could pay the indigenous coaches’ two years salary. Now, psychologically, the student here is living more comfortably than the teacher, has achieved more than the so-called teacher and therefore finds it difficult to subject himself under the authority of a man who has never played professional soccer all his life.

The foreign coaches are more respected by players and administrators alike and that tends to give them the upper hand ahead of their local colleagues.

Until the time that the local coaches are treated with much more respect like the foreign coaches in term of remunerations and free-hands to be able to operate without undue interference, the possibility of an indigenous coach succeeding with the senior national soccer team looks like a mirage for now and the near future.

Spain Vs Germany Semi Final Referee Viktor Kassai – A Closer Look

Hungary’s Viktor Kassai did not feature in the initial shortlist of referees drawn by Cricinfosite, for the semi-finals and final of the World Cup.

The reason why we did not consider him was his relative youth. At 35, he is among the youngest referees on duty at the World Cup.

A referee’s job is thankless, made more so by the fact that he is often dealing with prima donnas with a huge fan following. a single error could be hyped up by the media to such an extent as to threaten the referee’s international career.

Often a referee’s support staff, namely, the linesmen could blunder, and the main referee could still get blamed for it. This was highlighted in England’s match against Germany where the linesman failed to see Lampard’s shot at goal cross the line. And Larrionda copped all the blame.

And we had serious doubts as to whether a younger referee would be able to handle the pressure in a tournament where senior referees such as Larrionda have floundered.

But when we heard that the second semi-final between Spain and Germany had been assigned to Kassai, we were not unhappy about FIFA’s choice. Because Kassai has been among the more non-controversial referees in South Africa, this last month.

Kassai became part of FIFA’s elite panel in 2003. Among his best accomplishments, the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, the UEFA Euro 2008 the 2008 Olympic Games (men’s tournament), including in the final, and the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup stand out.

Before tonight’s semi-final, Kassai has officiated at 3 matches, in this tournament: Brazil Vs DPR Korea, Mexico vs Uruguay, and USA Vs Ghana.

In all, the young Hungarian handed out 6 yellow cards, and no red cards, in these 3 matches. In the Brazil match, Felipe Melo was the lone man to be awarded a yellow card. In the Mexico-Uruguay encounter, Hernandez and of Mexico, and fucile of Uruguay were the three men to be penalized. In the USA Vs Ghana game, USA’s Donovan and Ghana’s Gyan and Castro were the recipients.

There are some similarities between Irmatov (who refereed the first semi-final) and Kassai. Both are among the youngest referees, with Irmatov 2 years younger than Kassai. Also, neither referee is card happy. Like Irmatov, Kassai has also not awarded any red cards, during this tournament.

We wish Kassai a great match, in tonight’s semi-final, between Spain and Germany.

Spanish Super Cup 2011: A Tussle Between La Liga and Copa Del Rey Winners

Spain is the reigning world champion, having won the FIFA world cup in 2010 by beating Holland in the final. They have for long been considered one of the top football playing nations but have consistently underperformed at the international level until recently.

That said, the game is extremely popular in the country and the fans of the game constitute the biggest inspiration for the national team that relies on a solid championship structure at the club level.

The Spanish Super Cup, known as the Supercopa de España, is a Spanish football championship in which the winners of the La Liga take on the winners of the Copa del Rey. This is similar to the Community shield in England in which the winners of the Premier League and the FA cup face each other in a traditional season opener.

This year’s tournament in Spain will be contested by Barcelona, who won the 2010-11 edition of the La Liga; they will face Real Madrid who won the Copa del Rey, last season.

The competition as it is currently played was first organized in 1982. In a previous era of Spanish football, between 1940 and 1953, a similar competition was held, in which the winners of the league and the cup, then called the Copa del Generalismo, met in similar fashion.

The tournament was initially called Copa de Campeones when it began, in 1940, after which there was a hiatus for five years, before a similar contest was held in 1945, under the sponsorship of the Ambassador of Argentina, under the name of Copa de Oro Argentina.

Two years later, a new annual tournament called the Copa Eva Duarte de Perón was held and dedicated to the President and the first lady of Argentina. The tournament was held between the ninth and last months of the year, in the form of a single-leg final.

The 2010 Spanish Super Cup was contested by Sevilla FC who won the Copa del Rey that year, and Barcelona, who were the La Liga winners for the 2009-10 season. Barcelona beat Sevilla by a 5-3 aggregate score in the two-leg encounter to claim their 9th Super Cup title.

Among other champions, Real Madrid have won the title on eight occasions, since the tournament began in 1982, while Deportivo have won it twice. There have been seven other champions to have won it once each. These are Sevilla, Zaragoza, Valencia, Mallorca, Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad.

FIFA World Cup 2010 – Slovenia Vs Algeria Preview

Slovenia and Algeria will meet in a group C match on Sunday. Either team winning this match could have a great opportunity to qualify from a group in which England and USA are considered favourites to qualify for the round of 16.

A draw between the sides will only favour England and USA, so both teams could look to attack, and try and bank three full points from the game.

Algeria won a play-off against Egypt to gain a surprise qualification for this World Cup. They last qualified for the World Cup in 1986, and before that in 1982, and in neither of those tournaments did they get past the group stage.

Coach Rabah Saadane who oversaw those campaigns appears confident that his team will do better this time round.

Full-backs Madjid Bourgherra and Nadir Belhadj will have a big hand in any good fortune the team enjoys in South Africa; both bring their playing experience in the English Premier League to bear. They are all rounders who can attack when needed.

Forward Rafik Saifi, 35, is the team’s father figure, with experience playing for club team Istres in France. He has scored 19 goals from 62 games for Algeria.

This is Slovenia’s second foray into a World Cup, after 2002, on which occasion they exited after the group stage. They were lucky to qualify on an away goals rule after tieing 2-2, with Russia.

Slovenia strength lies in defence, with Samir Handanovic outstanding in goal, and they have been scored against on only 6 occasions in 10 qualifiers. Coach Matjaz Kek, a former defender, has groomed the team in his own defensive mould.

The 6’4″ tall forward Milivoje Novakovic, who plays for Koln, had the maximum of five goals in the qualifiers and will bear the burden of attacking. His height makes him formidable in set pieces and aerial attacks.

But Slovenia lack a quality midfielder to back Novakovic, with Robert Koren not quite measuring up, For Slovenia, the Algeria match is crucial, as a win here could set up a battle royale with USA, for second place behind England.

Algeria’s recent form is not inspiring, and if Slovenia can get a goal in, they have the defensive strength to make it count.

The key battle that could decide the eventual course of this match could be that between Aleksandr Radosavljevic and Karim Ziani. If Ziani’s attacking flair can be controlled, the threat to Slovenia’s goal would be reduced greatly, allowing the squad to put their own attacking plans to the test.

Fabio Cannavaro is a defender for Juventus and Italy. He stands at a modest 5’10. He doesn’t have incredible speed nor is he anything out of the ordinary strength wise. After this initial description, it would come to a surprise that he was the FIFA World Player of the Year a few years ago. What separates Cannavaro from the rest of the crop of top class defenders is his brain. He reads the game incredibly well and perfectly times all his tackles and headers. His advanced thought process comes from studying the game, concentration, and an incredible work rate.

Andres Iniesta is a midfield player for Spain and F.C. Barcelona. He recently scored the winning goal in overtime of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to clinch the tournament for his nation, their first World Cup ever! He is not amazingly quick, strong, fast, or flashy. He has a sound technical base, plays very simple, and is constantly moving off the ball. He defends very intelligently and is always putting in a good shift of work for his team. You won’t see Iniesta doing triple stepovers; he plays 1 or 2 touch and constantly combines and makes himself available for his teammates. He makes the game easier for everyone around him.

Wayne Rooney is a striker for Manchester United and England. He is roughly 5’10 and looks to be a bit overweight. Don’t let his physical appearance deceive you, this is a strong, fit player. Rooney is the only forward I’ve ever seen go for a header in the opposing team’s box trying to score; and the next play you see him making a slide tackle in his own box to save a goal. He leaves his heart and soul on the field every game. My English friends were all telling me that if their entire national team played with the passion of Rooney, they would win the World Cup. That clearly didn’t happen! He has great technique and a paranormal work rate and that is what makes him so successful.

I chose these 3 players to be emulated because they are normal athletes who became very intelligent in the game, developed their technique to perfection, and work ridiculously hard for their respective teams. Watch these guys carefully on the tv, you will learn a lot.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the 2 best players in the world right now, but they aren’t good players to study because they were simply born on another level than everyone else. They are so naturally gifted that I can’t even explain some of the things they do. Are they entertaining to watch? ABSOLUTELY! But if you’re trying to learn how to improve your child or yourself, watch Cannavaro, Iniesta, and Rooney. These are the best affordable kids soccer drills on the market!
