The Mexican fans regularly throw beer bottles and cups at players during goal celebrations or any altercation near the sidelines. They were also using laser pointers on the US goalkeeper. There were things beyond the chant that probably played in to the stoppage. Also this idea that homophobic chants are okay is wild. LGBTQ hate crimes are rising. We just had a shooting at a club in Colorado Springs. Allowing hate in any form against any community exacerbates the problem. It reinforces the beliefs of those who have contemplated bringing hard to these communities. But people who don't face this discrimination and this very real threat of harm and who aren't a part of these minority groups would never understand just how problematic this publicized chants are. It's not just "sports" when people eventually leverage that hate in some form of violence.
