First, the comments made by the CBS Morning Footy Crew are shameful and ignorant. Too lazy to do their homework on this topic. This is all about greed and money. Overall, the US Open Cup champion is awarded $300,000 in prize money and a berth in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, while the runner-up receives $100,000 from the US Soccer Federation. MLS owners want the U.S. Soccer Federation to pay more prize money. It's simply not cost-effective for MLS to send their top clubs to play in the U.S. Open Cup for the amount of money.
Good. If overplaying is becoming an issue. Then get rid of the leagues cup!
I watch the open cup more than the MLS, I take it more seriously because it's more like normal soccer
RAAAAAHHHH
Justice!
Such a bunch of nonsense. Average attendance is 5k for usoc games. The business model is broken and the “culture” is only being discussed by a small group of fans.
Good im so sick of mls havent cared about usmnt ussf or mls since the whole ny cosmos debacle
If people really cares about the us open cup they have to prove it attending to us open cup games not just complaining about it. Every season those stadiums are empty during this us open cup matches
I think we can just get rid of the season games played against the other conference and regular season games only take place within their respective conference to relieve the game congestion.
Love the sweatshirt Newark is for Hustlers👍👍👍Newark is the soccer capital of the US
Where's Heath?
No one really cared about this until they tried to take it away, then people suddenly give a horse's rear end? No, People just want a reason to hate MLS for doing whatever they want to do. It's as simple as that.
It's not about history or grass roots or culture of the sport. It's about money. USSF gets 50 percent of the gate for these matches and owns all of the streaming rights. It's all about the money.
I wonder if MLS execs and owners were surprised by how vocal and near unanimous fan backlash was?
See you in court!
Cindy Parlow with the towering header at the far post right there.
why would US soccer ever agree to this, thats hilarious. Whoever made this request or anyone who thought it was a good idea should be fired. it would hurt everyone involved with US soccer or the mls, probably including the people who made the request.
I never imagined that USSF would grow a spine and stand up to Garber's racketeering. #MLSagenda
Fire don garbage, he’s stunting the growth of the league at this point and only conceding to what the rich owners want. We’ve already established a fan base, we need to foster more competition and they need to pump more money into the soccer nation. Also open the amount of times teams can transfer players from second team to first. Also open the damn roster rules in general.
MLS should be taking way more heat for even requesting this (on par with the stupidity and greed of the Super League proposal)
Thank you USSF for stopping MLS from making the ridiculous mistake of destroying soccer increase popularity.
Counter-arguments for MLS points:
– Youth opportunities? MLS can very well change their own rules and regulations to allow MLS teams to promote players from their own developmental teams, and provide them said professional experience during this same tournament, league play, and other MLS participation tournaments.
– Congested schedule? Stop creating additional games during playoffs. Don’t participate in exhibition tournaments such as Leagues cup.
– Grow Soccer in US? Do a better job in marketing your product to the own markets in which they exist. Don’t put your televised league game behind a pay wall. Give away tickets to developmental youth soccer trams and leagues to grow interest in the sport, and maintain said interest.
While were at it…. Don Garber should resign/step down from USSoccer Board of Directors to, as he is focused on growing MLS and their business, and not in line with USSoccer board of directors interest which is grow soccer in the US.
US Soccer are just as bad if not worse than MLS. There should have long ago been a pathway to relegation. It would solve all the weak ownership groups that refuse to invest. The lack of investment is fine some owners cannot afford it and that is ok, just play a division lower.
MLS can go, USL is getting bigger and want to establish a promotion and relegation system
Tbh, I didn't understand the MLS argument of match congestion. They weren't anymore congested then any of the other leagues around the world. They would play on the weekends and occasionally during the midweek. You want your league to grow that's the level of competition the league needs. This is suppose to be a div 1 pro league, not a Sunday League in your local park. Increase the salary cap so that MLS teams have better depth to man manage the schedule better.
All advanced football countries have this sorta competition when pro teams meet small teams they don’t always play their first team until when they meet a competitive opponents and that’s fine let’s the coaches decide like some body says in this video
Love it! Thank you USSF
MLS should be ashamed
You can tell Felipe is compromised by the MLS. He talks of match congestion, but it was MLS the one that created the congestion adding an extra tournament. We are not dumb Felipe, tell people the truth
MLS can politely get bent
Huge lfg us soccer
This is a non topic. They come up with Allstar Games, International Tournaments, and new random Cups in the middle of the summer and still ask us the understand that they’d rather send the “USL/U-23” teams? Nah.
Imagine England or Spain suggesting the 1st teams wouldn’t participate in the FA Cup or Copa del Rey.
Then they create this by doing a Best of 3 in the first phase of MLS Cup.
My suggestion would’ve been to open the squads for Open Cup or whatever they call the “Messi Cup” to include their MLS Pro team roster and allow the managers to decide how serious they are taking each tournament.
Good, idont even watch MLS and i was angry at them not wanting to participate
Does ussf actually have any leverage if barely any mls players are nat team starters?
Bring back In Soccer We Trust podcast!
MLS is a joke, the owners pockets are always over the quality of the product on the pitch. The top league in the US just tried to pull out of the biggest domestic cup in the country. Imagine the premier league teams saying they are pulling out and their U-23s will play for them in the FA cup or Carabao Cup. Its insulting saying the cup isn't worth their time and energy jumping ship for a new plastic cup for a cash grab. The USSF just did the bare minimum and we are celebrating it. Why hasn't the USSF set forth a second smaller domestic cup to help grow USL, the USSF does not want the sport to grow they want MLS to grow so their friends and themselves make money. MLS Next pro is a corny u-23 league, The owners don't even have the originality to give them unique names to help draw attention. Look at the feeder system in baseball, at least USL is trying to actually grow the sport at different levels including the woman's game. The gatekept professional level in the country and pay to play system will doom the US soccer culture to mediocrity.
Flash forward to months from now when all the noise makers have moved on to something else and these matches will be played in front of dozens of people, as is tradition.
i wonder what the baby of MLS, David Beckham, has to say about this. Crazy that this is even coming up after Messi joining the league. Fixture congestion is the biggest shot in the foot from the MLS
Now the MLS looks like a joke of league, not that it wasn't at all
Ummm us open cup honestly isn't an important tournament. It's a waste of time for MLS.
I thought MLS made a bad choice… I admit ignorance about how soccer is organized, but what can US Soccer actually do to MLS?
Good. Now for some real movement towards preventing MLS’ monopoly.
I find it funny that MLS says in one breath that they like to see more investment to improve the club's, improve the playing field, etc.and then turn around and say "sorry…playing in USOC is not wotth our investment."
There was soccer in America way before MLS, and there will be soccer if it ever folds. The MLS is not the governing body of the U.S. soccer, and I am glad USSF finally reminded MLS of the fact!
I think the Open Cup is a good thing so I’m glad about this
MLS has no ground to stand on about schedule congestion when they made up a tournament that literally nobody cares about with the leagues cup that adds an extra eight games to the schedule if you go all of the way. U.S. Open cup has six games at most. MLS created this problem for themselves by creating a greedy tournament that nobody likes. Leaks cup should go, open cup should stay!
