Berhalter's Bizarre USMNT Roster is no Surprise.

Gregg Berhalter has dropped his January camp USMNT Roster and it might be the most bizarre roster he’s every dropped, filled with mediocre MLS lifers who have no quality, no potential and no future with the USMNT. There are a few interesting names but overall it’s filled with mind-boggling selections who should never put on the USMNT jersey.

  1. As a Sounders fan, Jackson Ragen is a fine homegrown product for a roster guy… he's not a star… he's clearly not a National team player and hasn't earned a callup. He's just not that level. I want every MLS teams to be produccing guys this level. And for every 10 of those guys, you might have 1 has a much higher potential. Atencio is young enough that there's a bit more potential there. Again, it's great that Sounders are producing a bunch of guys this level. Guys who can perform at an MLS level, maybe some of them go abroad and could perform at Belgium-level or something for a few years at their peak. For every batch of players like Ragen and Atencio, you may get an Obed Vargas with a higher ceiling. There are quite a few MLS sides not developing anyone close to this.

As for why we see Ragen and Atencio called up, but not Vargas… makes zero sense.

  2. I was never a big soccer fan but really started to get interested in the team and watch every game due to this channel. When they extended Berhalter I went from watching every game to basically checking in on this channel every 3-6 months and watching zero games.

  3. Fans, you can rant all day, USSF doesn't hear you! The reality is MLS Owners and MLS Player Association control USSF. In order to Change this reality You, the Fans, must organize into a USMNT Fan Association. With this tool We can put pressure on USSF by demonstrating at MLS games, lobbying USSF , even demanding 1/3 of vote to elect USSF President!

  4. USMNT G team. I expected this. Not surprised therefore not really disappointed.

Edit: Esmir is good. Won't be in MLS too long. Quality player. Also full disclosure I follow Orlando City and the team has turned down several loan offers for Duncan McGuire from a few EPL teams. I would venture to say the scouts must see something in his game and he did produce. I'll admit he's not the prettiest player.

  5. Is GGG setting up his next move to MLS? He’s sucking up to them with rosters like this and it makes me think he wants to prep his next job, maybe exec rather than coach. He continues to disappoint….

  6. Ggg knows he won’t have an actual legacy of relevance as a manager so he’s trying to milk the amount of “usmnt debut” players under his belt so it could look like he did something during his tenure. Then again it is his job so maybe he sees something in some of these guys that we dont.

  7. I often struggle to understand who is actually naming the players for USMNT rosters….is it Gregg or is it MLS? This roster is as nearly as confusing as the Roster for the last Gold Cup. I get that we can't get our A-Team for every camp/tournament, but constantly giving call-ups to sub-par players and/or dead ends frustrates the hell out of me. Given caps/camps as participation trophies drives me insane. Whoever made this roster, since they obviously are idiots, should have just gone all out and selected Roldan, Arriola, Guzan, Yedlin, Jozy, Long, and the rest of the worthless names pushed by MLS.

  8. Hey Pete any chance you and/or Tac could do a realistic ideal Olympic lineup. I know it's essential a U23 tournament but some of our best u23s are already on the senior team. And some eligible players like Tessman & Busio play a lot for their team and won't get released. I know who we'd all love to see but who we can realistically get is a different story.

  9. Pete's sarcasm in this video was hilarious. You can feel his frustration with these head scratching selections: I'm interested to see Bernard Kamungo, Caleb Wiley, Diego Luna, and Dejuan Jones. Outside of those 4, this roster is filled with Gregg's favorites, mediocrity, and vibes & fives. I wouldn't be surprised if this collection of meh can't get a result vs. Slovenia. 1st USMNT roster of 2024 is a gigantic miss.

  10. What a perfect opportunity to use this camp to get the Olympics U-23 squad to gel together and waste it on a bunch of bums who aren’t even their best players in their MLS team

  11. Good stuff overall! This Camp is going to be pre-diabetic with all the cupcakes.

Only thing I disagree with is your Obed V over Josh A take. After starting off okay, Obed V fell off this past season with the sounders and lost his starting spot to Josh A (who at the moment is clearly a better player then obed).

  12. There are so many more things that can be said about this roster, but I'll leave it to the other commentors. What keeps going through my mind is this:

Tell me Gregg hates Matt Miazga without telling me Gregg hates Matt Miazga… The guy wins MLS Defender of the Year, and Berhalter calls in his backup!! Ian Murphy doesn't even start for FC Cincinnati, but he's on the national team? Petty move, Gregg… 😂

  13. Zawadski is 23, not 26.

His value comes from versatility. He played every position except striker and goalkeeper in Columbus. Hes a great end of the bench guy because hes plug and play anywhere and hes consistent and reliable.

  14. Love the MLS heavy roster. Honestly, this camp should be about promoting the domestic league. The better MLS gets, the better the national team gets.

Gone are the days of some dick from Germany saying MLS is irrelevant. No national team wins a world cup without help from domestic players. Go MLS and Go Crew
