Haji BRACE as Gio SHINES l USMNT through!

Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT was 1 min away from crashing out of the Nations League semi-final but a lucky own-goal from Jamaica and a Haji Wright brace off 2 Gio Reyna assists saved his butt. There’s lots to break down as we discuss.

  1. Does GGG really deserve any credit for the subs? We needed a goal and he literally used every midfielder or forward at his disposal. Our only unused subs were defenders and GKs (Ream, Lund, McKenzie, Horvath, and Callendar). So it's not like he looked down the bench and made any significantly strategic decisions of one guy over another. He just threw everything at the wall and something finally stuck. In fact, it didn't even stick until AET because none of his subs were involved in the game tying goal. You get zero credit for that in my book.

  2. I like Haji, and he obviously came up big and finished his chances last night, but I also don't put him into the starting lineup. I'd also not replace Sargent with him, if Sargent were to have remained healthy for this camp. Balogun/Pepi/Sargent on the initial roster was still the right choice, in my opinion.

I know that might sound crazy to some after what we saw last night, but even if you look at both of Haji's goals, he made each more difficult than necessary. He was put through behind the defense on both, and his first touch on both plays allowed defenders to recover. He just made secondary adjustments on each goal to regain some space, and then obviously finished well. But, I wouldn't call either of those plays "clinical" on his part or representative that he leaps to the top of the depth chart at either the #9 or as a winger.

Ask yourself, what other moments did you notice Haji in his time on the pitch? Any notable combinations? Any other shots on goal? He was slipped in by two exquisite passes, and almost bungled both. It's harsh, but it's important context and a gut reaction shouldn't drive his automatic inclusion as a starter, or even on the roster if our full compliment of forwards is available.

  3. The way I look at this in terms of how it translates to our prospects in Copa America, and even more importantly in WC 2026. And by that barometer, this was an utter failure.

This Jamaica team, with the players they had available, would never be expected to reach the knockout round of either of those tournaments. So, this game, although it came in a competition that required a winner and therefore added-extra-time, would only really be relevant as a comparison to a group stage game, against a team that would probably be projected to come in last in a group of 4 within the setting of CA 2024 or WC 2026. In that sense, I look at this as a 1-1 tie against a severe underdog, on our home turf. Compound that with it only being a 1-1 tie through a last gasp own-goal, literally on a play where our GK was all the way forward for a corner kick. The most desperate of desperate, last ditch option. It could have just as easily been a 1-0 loss. If we translate it to CA 2024, since we know our group opponents, it would be like barely squeaking out a tie against Bolivia, and to be fair to Bolivia, they will probably field a better team than Jamaica did yesterday. That would be completely unacceptable, by most reasonable people's standards (Note: I didn't say "by GGG's boss's standards").

I will say that I don't necessarily think it's fair to place the full blame on GGG, but he needs to be where the accountability starts. When you consistently have a group that underachieves, and the culprits are often poor squad selection and/or obviously being ill-prepared with respect to the tactical approach, then the coach has to be held responsible. While GGG wasn't on the field to shoot the ball for Pulisic and/or Tillman in what were a couple quality chances, or to wrap his own foot around better placed crosses, he sets the team up. He sets the tone and structure of what the team is trying to do. Too often, our players look as if they are unsure of their responsibilities or what the game requires of them based on the posture of the opponent or situation within certain parts of the game. That is all attributable to preparation and tactical approach, which is directed above the level of the individual players. It's too easy to say one or more of them need to step up and just get the job done with their talent. It's incredibly difficult to effect that type of impact on the field, even if you are a player who clearly sees that the game plan is not working. You can't take a group of 11, who have been drilled to row in a certain direction, at a certain cadence, and expect 1, 2, or 3 of them to start making changes on the fly without resulting in as much chaos as benefit. It's just not practical, and I feel bad for the players on the pitch.

  4. Pulisic seems to be stuck in 2017. He has to evolve, improve vision, no more hero ball. He gave up a simple assist last night and decided to shoot uselessly.

  5. The part you guys mentioned about "the players wanted this coach, they may share some blame" was something they were saying on the spanish feed on Univision. They're more critical than our own media!

  6. Berhalter’s football style is like plain oatmeal. Every game under him is flavorless oatmeal. The players have to bottle it up, come back from their clubs and perform like flavorless drones running about.

  7. I hate that ive had to boycott the usmnt bc of GGG. You see ive been a football fan for decades and lived in a uk commonwealth country msny years so know what actual football is abd GGG is incapable. Its stupefying having him as the leader. We suck so bad, this result proves im right in giving up on them. Jamaica beat themselves we won nothing. Wake up, fans accepting mediocrity is why we're in this position. In spain or Portugal etc the fans would unite and not go to gsmes or watch on tv until the change was made. But Americans also dont appreciate promotion relegation so its hopeless. Ultimately im blaming our ignorant fans for this, are you one of them ?

  8. I honestly didnt mind Starting Tillman. In this MOMENT, where Gio just isnt playing and Malik is in really good form, it was perfectly reasonably to start Tillman. He had, at this point, earned the benefit to see how he could do. Especially against a team that didnt have so many key players. Greg has a Lot to be questioned aboit and yes he shouldn't be the coach any more(should have never been hired). I respect the choice tobsee just how Tillman could play in a important game. And he didnt show up. The answer is very clear. Even if it was obvious that Gio is essentially a unquestioned starter, I respect the look to see how it could play out.

  9. I'm very high on Tillman, but today he had an uncharacteristically heavy touch all game long. A bit more finesse and he could have had a very good performance. He's definitely capable. Gio showed why he deserves to start with this team right now.

  10. I feel vindicated because I feel like Sargent and Haji are by far the most in-form strikers in our pool right now, and Haji scored exactly the type of goals that I expected him to score when he was announced as the alternate. He's had a very fast trigger and a lot of precision with his shots lately, like a cowboy at high noon. Yes he was a "winger" today, but let's be honest, he played as a second striker for all intents and purposes, as he should.

  11. You guys gotta stop glazing balogun he’s literally the same level as Pepi as of right now and pepi has been waaaaaayyyy more productive with his limited minutes for pace compared to the amount of minutes balogun has had with his club team

  12. I wish more soccer pundits were critical of GGG…I understand why they aren't, but in order to get him fired, the media needs to get loud. need Dempsey to cut a promo! lol

  13. Lol you two arre so bias and dumb as fuck. Miles Robinson was not the player who was defending casually and Cephas just runs past him leading to a shot on goal. That was Chris Richard's. You both should know this considering you just watched the game like 15 minutes ago. And, start Ream over Miles? A slow old man who is getting no minutes for his club against those speedy Jamaicans?

  14. First thing first, the players on top need to be not selfish with the ball and learn that they are a team…Second, the coach needs to learn to use the right players to perform…

  15. Berhalter knows nearly nothing about football. Subtle and sublime is how the world class players do it, and Gio's been there all along. The talent we have is tops. Leave it to Berhalter, and we will not do diddly squat.
