Why do some people get SO mad when American’s call it soccer instead of football?
To find out, we’ve gotta travel back in time to 1863, the year England’s FOOTBALL governing body was formed. Before that, teams in London alone were playing over a dozen variations of the sport… That is, until a man named Ebenezer Morely formed ‘The Association’ — establishing a definite code of rules for how the game is to be played.

This resulted in the distinction of Rugby Football —played primarily with your hands — and Association Football — played primarily with your feet. If you think that sounds clunky, so people in the 1880’s, until a group of Oxford students coined the terms Rugger, and Assoccer to quickly distinguish between the two. Variants like footer and socca were also popular, before Socker emerged as the clear front runner.

In areas where football was NOT the dominant sport, like Cornwall, South Wales, and eventually the United States, it’s nickname ‘Socker’, then ‘Soccer’ was used.
