The USWNT were in New Zealand for their first match, playing Vietnam. While Vietnam proudly sang their anthem at the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time, the US players barely sang their National Anthem.
5 out of the 11 players put their hand on their heart and sang the American National Anthem.
In what appeared to be an act of defiance, most in US Women’s Soccer team did not sing the anthem, despite hundreds of fans in the stadium who were there to support them.
The world cup champions are no strangers to protests during the playing of the National Anthem. Led by Megan Rapinoe the team has taken the knee multiple times, in protests inspired by Colin Kaepernick.
