The USMNT was handed a loss by Germany this Saturday. Gregg Berhalter managed to get outcoached by Julian Naglesmann during his Germany National Team debut, so what did we learn?

  1. I sometimes think Dest might want to consider a positional change. His defensive deficiencies seem beyond repair. He's proven to have all the tools offensively and not saying he could supplant anyone currently in the pecking order but maybe he'd be better utilized as more of an attacking option.

  2. Our defense "kinda got exposed"?! That is a massive understatement. The defense got exposed repeatedly, consistently and didn't seem to learn from its mistakes. That group needs to be significantly upgraded, but at this point, I don't know where the players to do that would come from.

  3. The US has to have a better defensive strategy to compete against better teams. Not going to win a game against a top team while giving up 3 goals. Italy won the world cup in 2006 by scoring 1 goal and playing defense for 85 minutes. Spain won in 2010 by scoring 1 goal and playing keep away for 85 minutes. In 2014, after beating the hosts 7-1, Germany had to keep a clean sheet against Argentina to win the final 1-0. Haven't seen anyone make a deep run in the world cup while giving up lots of goals.

  4. What I learned:

    1. I learned I can feel really good about this game despite the loss basically for all of the reasons Tac mentioned.

    2. We can play the more fluid 4-2-3-1 style with Reyna at the 10 and go toe to toe against top opposition, but we need Adams in the midfield against teams better than us.

    3. If the goal (as Walker Zimmerman stated) is to win the World Cup, then our CB room is not deep enough for us to continue to exclude John Brooks for non-soccer reasons. CB is arguably our weakest position, and our current best CB is a little slow and will likely age out before 2026. It's time to mend fences.

    4. The old flat 4-3-3 we played last cycle is garbage and will be punished against top quality opposition.

    5. In the next game, if Reyna has to come off after 45, we should bring in a winger and move Pulisic to the 10, keeping the same shape and style instead of reverting to the old 4-3-3 from last cycle.

    6. We're still over-reliant on wide play and overloading the wings to attack. There were several times when Balogun made a run centrally in transition, and none of our guys took a chance with a through ball. We just kept pushing it wide.

    7. Berhalter may be learning. He certainly seems to be changing things up for the second cycle. We'll see if this continues, but coming off of the rigidity and crap rosters/lineups of the last cycle, it's nice to see. Twice in a row, he's called in really good rosters top to bottom; he's put out good starting lineups; and, after trying the old "Berhalter ball" a couple of times (most of the game against Uzbekistan and early in the 2nd half against Germany), he's changing things up midgame when it isn't working to more of the system we played during the Nations League, and the team performs noticeably better.

  5. Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabri were not "in uniform" to say the least. They are the few ballers now who know too well how to reward back the ball for a goal to occur for sure. In the line of scrimmage or in other words in the area of uncertainty.  Mexico and US playing style in midfield differ it is a must watch vs Germany.❤️

  6. You're right Filippo 1st half it was more or less a balanced game, I'm hoping 2nd half was an experiment, which system is better 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, it was clearly 4-2-3-1, the defensive lapses 1st half aren't on Gregg they were individual errors

  7. Is the score that surprising USA is higher ranked than Germany but that is partly because FIFA wants attention in the US so Concacaf teams tend to be over rated. In reality Germany are simply better than the USMNT and also Mexico and Switzerland who are also ranked above then. A pinch of reality is needed the US team is improving but only Pulisic gets in the German squad and then as a bench player.

  8. The Copa America is a South American tournament. There should be a cultural connection between the invited teams. That’s why teams like Panama, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras etc. are usually invited. Japan makes some sense because there are millions of Japanese people in South America historically, but other than that the only Asian teams you should invite are like the Philippines, Guam or Macao.

  9. Usmnt, A nonstarter, life full of schitt, I don't need to pile on. Won't watch, but, ill continue to predict US, goes nowhere. This generation has already peaked, squandered 2wc!!! The third being blown is guaranteed. Shifty defense, horrible tactics, overall strategy is feeble.

  10. Here’s my take, in the last 3 matches the USMNT have looked, lost, hesitant and almost like they’re handcuffed, they have not looked fluid or even good while in comparison to the Nations league where they looked confident and organized in defense, basically to me at least, Berhalter just cannot get anymore out of this team and he’s clearly out of his depth and cannot get the team organized on defense, I’m legitimately worried that they’re going to crash out in the Copa America

  11. The biggest take from this game is that you keep fluffing up the USMNT into some kind of soccer super power and truth is they aren't even close to being a contender much less a top team competing for the WC.

  12. Klinsmann is the only coach who could get you to the 1/4 finals 2026 and from there on the crowd needs to push you and you need to do something magical, something you never did before or thought you capable of. And once you reach the semi finals in a world cup, all bets are off !!!!!

  13. 7 things I learned
    1) Gregghalter is still ass
    2) Gregghalter is still incompetent
    3) Gregghalter still can't adjust in game
    4) Gregghalter still doesn't know how to use players
    5) Gregghalter isn't the guy to move us forward
    6) Based on history Gregghalter will never get us to punch above our weight
    7) Gregghalter still can't grow hair

  14. That's a big problem with elo ratings. When teams play primarily in different circles, the elo ranking is distorted.
That's why Mexico and the USMNT are so high in the rankings when they should be much lower.

  15. As long as GGG learned from this game that Berhalter ball doesn't work. What he did in the 1st half was better. But did he learn that lesson? We shall see.

  16. Is not the Gregg, but he Gara gave gio rena controlling the mild field , because what gio does is that, gio create anxiety to the opponent and passes will be flowing to balogun and pullistic. U must have gio rena abd tyler adams in there. United States could have beat hell out of Germany. The whole world is afraid of gio renas mild field skillet cause he makes the game look easy like lionel messi, and both play the same style, just compare gio rena and messi period.

  17. 1. If we have Jedi then I’d start Jedi and Scally. Dest is a liability. 2. Hopping CCV can pair with Ream. Richards isn’t ready. 3. We have to feed Balogun and let him make runs and combine.

  18. They could of used John Brooks. Ream is getting old, Richards is barely playing at Palace. Pulisic diving was a joke, after scoring he disappears from the game. Germany could of scored at least 5-6 gols, this was not a great German Team.
