FINAL | United States vs Brazil

The United States are champions of the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup after defeating Brazil, 1-0, in the Final courtesy of a Lindsey Horan header on Sunday night at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

The four-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winners become the first team to lift the W Gold Cup trophy and also claimed their 15th trophy all-time in Concacaf competitions.

Brazil enjoyed the brighter start of the two sides by putting pressure on the U.S. defense. A long-range effort from Antonia in the 6’ and a Duda Ferreira free kick in the 9’ kept U.S. GK Alyssa Naeher on her toes, as did a Gabi Portilho shot over the crossbar in the 22’.

The U.S. started to take control as time ticked past the half-hour mark, and minutes after her header off a corner kick was saved, Lindsey Horan broke the deadlock in the 45+1’ by taking an Emily Fox cross and sending a perfectly-placed header into net for a 1-0 lead.

The intensity grew as the second half wore on. There was no much in the way of scoring chances, as each defense did well to maintain their lines and clear away any danger.

As play trickled into the final quarter-hour, Brazil started committing more numbers forward in attack in hopes of an equalizer and nearly found it in the 85’ when Geyse steered a shot just wide.

In the end, though, the U.S. defense held firm until the final whistle, securing the clean sheet victory and cementing their legacy as the first ever W Gold Cup champions.

Canada vs United States | 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup

2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup
Semifinals | Canada vs United States
Snapdragon Stadium

W GOLD CUP Group Stage | United States 0-2 Mexico

Relive the excitement of the clash between United States and Mexico with these thrilling highlights! 🤩

The last match of Group A of the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup took place on Monday evening at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, where Mexico earned a historic 2-0 win against the United States to capture a first-place finish in the group.

It is the first Mexico win against the United States since 2010, a span of 16 matches. The two goals also snap a streak of 33 straight matches in which the U.S. had kept a clean sheet in Concacaf competition.

Both teams went all in for this final group stage match, wanting to get on top early on. FW Sophia Smith tried to give the USWNT an early lead in the 7’, controlling the ball until the box and shooting for goal, but Mexico GK Esthefanny Barreras was ready to stop it.

Mexico responded fast with a free kick in the 14’ taken by FW Maria Sanchez, but U.S. GK Alyssa Naeher stopped her efforts.

Mexico took a 1-0 lead in the 38’ in breathtaking fashion, as U.S. DF Becky Sauerbrunn misplayed a clearance deep in her own half, allowing Mexico’s FW Jaqueline Ovalle to take advantage and control the ball just inside the área. Ovalle got past Naeher before chipping over two defenders into the back of the net.

Karla Nieto nearly made it two right before intermission with a shot from outside the área that struck the crossbar.

The U.S. tried to get back on even terms in the 56’ from a free kick after Mexican DF Greta Espinoza fouled Captain and MF Lindsey Horan outside the box, only to see Horan’s shot sail over the crossbar.

The USWNT didn’t stop trying, though, with FW Trinity Rodman hooking a shot just wide in the 89’.

Finally, in the dying minutes of the game in the 90’+5, FW Mayra Pelayo closed the Mexican win with a banger from outside the box that landed in the top right corner, giving Mexico a historic win that they will never forget.

Group Stage | United States vs Dominican Republic
Dignity Health Sports Park

The second match of Group A on the first match day of the Concacaf W Gold Cup group stage saw the United States down Prelims winner Dominican Republic 5-0 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California on Tuesday evening.

On her first start with the USWNT, 18-year-old FW Olivia Moultrie scored the first goal of the 2024 W Gold Cup group stage in the 8’, with FW Midge Purce controlling the ball into the área and crossing for Moultrie to finish past Dominican Republic GK Paloma Pena for a 1-0 lead.

Lynn Williams then found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead in the 30’ thanks to another great run into the area by Purce, who got her second assist of the match.

Getting her third assist of the night, Purce sent a long low ball from outside the area in the 59’ into Moultrie, who was well-positioned in front of the Dominican goal to score her first senior brace, giving a 3-0 advantage to the USWNT.

After a VAR revision, the referee Astrid Gramajo awarded a penalty kick to the U.S. after Dominican DF Brianne Reed committed a foul in the area on Jaedyn Shaw in the 86’. DF Jenna Nighswonger was confident in taking the ball and putting it in the back of the net, scoring her first international goal for the Stars and Stripes and a 4-0 advantage.

Reed committed a foul again trying to stop an attack from FW Trinity Rodman in the 90’+3. The referee awarded back-to-back penalties and FW Alex Morgan converted for the fifth goal of the evening.

After getting their first three points and first win, the USWNT will take to the Dignity Health Sports Park pitch once again against Argentina, while the Dominican Republic will look to get their first goals against Mexico on Friday evening.

🇺🇸 United States gets crowned 🏆, Mexico 🇲🇽 end as runner-ups 🥈and Canada 🇨🇦 gets the third place 🥉

Canada and Haiti will each try to finish the CWU17 on a high note when they face each other in the Third-Place Match on Sunday.

Canada suffered a tough 2-1 extra time loss to Mexico in the semifinals, but they did manage to become the first team to score against Mexico in the tournament.

The Canadians are led by talented striker Annabelle Chukwu, who has five goals across Canada’s four matches.

Haiti also have a prolific striker in their ranks in the form of Lourdjina Etienne, who has bagged seven goals in the CWU17, good for second-place in the tournament’s scoring table.

Haiti were defeated 7-1 by the U.S. in the semifinals but are strong in all phases and will be keen to collect a win in their finale.

It is the third time that Canada and Haiti have met in a CWU17 Third-Place Match, with Canada winning the previous two by 4-2 in 2016 and then 2-1 in 2018.

Women's Under-17 | United States vs Haiti | Mexico vs Canada

Catch all the action from the Semifinals in our highlights package!
United States vs Haiti

The day started with defending champions the United States punching their Under-17 Women’s World Cup ticket thanks to a 7-1 victory against Haiti. With the win, the U.S. have qualified for their sixth U17 Women’s World Cup.

The U.S. got things rolling in the 24’ through Mya Townes, who received a pass from Melanie Barcenas and finished for a 1-0 lead. It was then 2-0 at halftime as Kennedy Fuller scored off a cross from Alexandra Pfeiffer in the 40’ to double the margin.

Fuller then scored her eighth goal of the tournament in the 47’ with a smooth right-footed stroke into net, extending the U.S. lead to 3-0. Pfeiffer added her name to the scoresheet in the 59’ when she hauled in a long ball from Katie Scott and scored to make it 4-0.

Haiti never stopped fighting, though, and star striker Lourdjina Etienne notched her seventh goal of the tournament with a penalty conversion in the 80’, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

However, the day belonged to the U.S., who finished in strong fashion thanks to a hat-trick in six minutes from Kimmie Ascanio.

Ascanio found the top right cornet of net for her first score in the 83’, followed two minutes later by her second in the 85’ off a cross from Scott. The trio of goals and 7-1 final scoreline was then completed in the 88’ when she pounced on a rebound off the post and calmly tucked away a Left-footed shot.

Mexico vs Canada

A goal in extra time from Vanessa Aguilar earned Mexico a dramatic 2-1 win against Canada in the day’s second semifinal, earning Mexico their seventh U17 Women’s World Cup appearance.

Mexico were first to find the breakthrough, as a Right-footed strike from Carla Montes Frias off a deflection from just outside the area in the 25’ resulted in a 1-0 lead for the host nation.

Canada looked to respond by playing into dangerous striker Annabelle Chukwu, but there was no way past the Mexican defense and GK Camila Vazquez, who made back-to-back saves in the 74’ to keep her side ahead.

But there was nothing Vazquez could do just a minute later in the 75’ when Chukwu received a ball and unleashed a right-footed shot that beat Vazquez at the near post to even things at 1-1.

Matters had to be resolved in extra time and Mexico would emerge with the decisive strike in the 101’, as Aguilar followed up her initial blocked shot with a fine finish from an acute angle to deliver the 2-1 victory for El Tricolor.
